How Many Sets And Reps Should You Do? I can tell you that for me personally, I do 3 sets for most of my movements, and I typically work in the 8-12 rep range. And this is pretty much the same set/rep structure that I like to use with most of my online coaching clients! But when it comes to building muscle and making progress in the gym… The magic actually isn’t in the number of sets OR the number of reps that you do. The “magic” is in the INTENSITY of those sets and of those reps. So in my example, if I consistently did 3 sets of 8-12 reps BUT those sets weren’t intense or all that challenging… I probably wouldn’t build very much muscle, and I wouldn’t make a ton of progress in the gym. So sets and reps are definitely important, most people are going to want to 3 sets typically, and work somewhere in the 5-15 rep range for the most part. But in order to build muscle and make progress, the exact number of sets/reps is not the most important factor. The most important factor is overall INTENSITY of those sets and of those reps. From gym floor anxiety to competition floor confidence, this is the story of my 1:1 client Madison Madison has been through the full gym transformation. From starting off in lockdown with some bands and dumbbells in his living room. To feeling anxious about walking through the gym doors. To feeling confident and excited walking out on the competition floor at Turf Games. He was someone, who before joining the EMA really didn’t know how to see positive change. Stuck in a rut with poor eating habits and a lack of fitness routine. He came to me, asking how he could flip all of this around. 20kilo of body weight lost and an average of 40kilos added to all his big lifts in the gym later. He is now thriving and knows exactly how to live a heathy and active life long term. He came away from calorie tracking but still saw positive results in the body. Because we used it as a tool to learn and build from but isn’t something you need to do for the rest of your life. He smashed 2 Turf Games competitions with EMA teams and I can bet you, he never would have imagined doing that when he first started out! Madison took self responsibility to make sure his actions reflected his goals. He showed up even on the days when he maybe didn’t want to. And he always asked for help when he needed it.
