Gun Violence is a public health crisis—so we’re taking action. Northwell’s Center for Gun Violence Prevention is investing in gun violence research, developing best practices for hospitals, and mobilizing a national coalition of healthcare leaders to depolarize gun safety. Our goal is to dramatically reduce #gunviolence so that it's no longer a driver of hospital admissions for injuries or deaths. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eVMtQixS
Traditionally, hospitals have been the place to care for gunshot victims after they have suffered their wounds. Now, some are reimagining their role so that providers see themselves as integral to preventing firearm injury in the first place. For this week's Washington Post column, I interviewed Dr. Chethan Sathya MD, a pediatric trauma surgeon and the director of the Center for Gun Violence Prevention at Northwell Health in New York, who has spearheaded efforts including universal screening of all patients for their risk of firearm injury. Someone who keeps firearms at home will receive counseling on safe storage then and there. If they don’t already secure their weapons, the hospital will provide them with a gun lock at the time of counseling. https://lnkd.in/eegf673Q #firearminjury #firearmsafety #gunviolence #violenceprevention #hospitals #healthpolicy #prevention
