A very interesting initiative where AI is being used to improve women's health in developing countries! 🌍 A cohort of Kenyan nurses and midwives are now getting trained to use a new, portable ultrasound machine designed specifically for low- and middle-income countries. This device is soon to incorporate AI capabilities, making it more effective in identifying pregnancy risk factors. Here the technology aims to use algorithms trained with thousands of annotated ultrasound images. Midwives sweep the probe across the belly, and the algorithm flags high-risk pregnancies, guiding the necessary care recommendations. Projects like these need more visibility and adoption across all developing regions to ensure better healthcare for women. #AI #MaternalHealth #WomensHealth #Innovation #GlobalHealth #DevelopingCountries #HealthcareTechnology

Leading trauma-informed nurses to prevent traumatic births and begin healing | 🚀 220K+ followers | 🎙 Podcast Host, Author, Speaker, Healthcare Consultant
*NEW* 2024 Panel Presentation launching today! Sometimes nurses and perinatal advocates are surprised to hear that the four co-authors of the FIRST article focusing on obstetric violence in an AWHONN journal live in 4 different states across the US! We also collaborate on a number of other ventures, including the Trauma-Informed Birth Nurse Program, quality improvement data collection, other articles and scholarly posters, podium presentations, and online communities. This year we're offering a panel presentation based on the article “Exposing the Role of Labor and Delivery Nurses as Active Bystanders in Preventing or Perpetuating Obstetric Violence.” Today is our first presentation of 2024 - it's virtual! Our article explores how “obstetric violence is an issue of global scope and magnitude. Its widespread and continued presence indicates cultural tolerance enabled by policies and procedures that uphold paternalism. Labor and delivery nurses are the health care professionals who spend the most time at the point of care during birth, and their role must be examined. As active bystanders, labor and delivery nurses are uniquely positioned to prevent or perpetuate obstetric violence during labor and birth. Reflection on the nurse role is necessary to provide optimal care, enhance relationships with patients, and continue to evolve as a professional discipline. Perinatal nurses must lead the change to trauma-informed care practices to mitigate obstetric violence and reduce birth trauma.” (Runyon et al., 2023). Say "hi" if you're in the Evidence Based Birth® conference today! We're prepping for a very actionable and collaborative session! Powerhouse co-authors that keep me in aw and in check: Maggie Runyon Paula Rojas Landivar (Richards) Cristen Pascucci

Digital Health | Patient-Centricity | Healthcare Innovation </> Business Development Director at Dawn Health - launching SaMD products for life science companies
Great case study on the application of #telehealth during pregnancy. Ochsner Health launched a program to support expectant mothers during pregnancy to avoid complications. The #digitalhealth program offered connected blood pressure cuffs to enable readings at home and other tools to receive support. And the outcomes speak for themselves. MOM (Maternity Online Monitoring) reduced the amount of pre-mature births by 20%. It also rendered the clinics more effective due to the simplifications of workflows. And received high satisfaction ratings according to the article below. This idea can really revolutionize pregnancy care if covered more broadly and can be considered more inclusive than traditional follow-ups. And with increased efficiency and efficacy, the solution hopefully pays for itself in the long run.

For decades, ultrasounds have been the cornerstone of pregnancy management in high-income countries because they can identify high-risk pregnancies early, allowing clinicians and families to plan ahead and mitigate risks. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), they’re often available in higher-level facilities in larger cities, but are historically unaffordable for community clinics. New portable, AI-enabled ultrasound devices have the potential to help midwives and nurses in LMICs save more lives. #IDM2024.
