How can we make better use of materials to enable affordable EVs? That’s the subject of Material Markets for Mobility (or M3 for short), a new conference that will take place this September, hosted by CRU and A2MAC1 - Decode the future, focusing on the entire supply chain for EVs.
Our Paris-based conference is the first to bring together participants from across the supply chain, from producers of raw materials such as steel, aluminium, copper and battery metals, to vehicle manufacturers.
Affordability matters because it’s 1) the main barrier to more profound growth in EV adoption, and 2) the EV industry and its value chain are experiencing intensifying competition and pressure on profit margins, so cost reduction is now the #1 priority in automaker boardrooms.
So what can be done to make EVs affordable to mainstream buyers? We believe the answer lies in more effective use of materials.
Materials dominate the cost structure of all vehicles, but particularly EVs, given their reliance on large and expensive batteries. The solution to this problem doesn’t rest solely with the battery, however – it requires a joined-up approach across the vehicle, that encompasses lightweighting, more-efficient powertrains, intelligent pack design, supply-chain streamlining, vertical integration and improved material choices, inside and outside the battery.
Experts from CRU’s battery, wire and cable, sustainability and metals teams will be joined by vehicle teardown specialists from A2MAC1 and guest speakers from across the industry to provide a comprehensive discussion of the challenges ahead.
What gives Chinese companies their cost advantage and how can the West compete? How can we handle the challenge of combining affordability with sustainability? Join us in Paris on September 18 and take part in this critical debate.
