Since I have began teaching, I have been listening to podcasts, watching documentaries, and spending a significant amount of time on YouTube. As we approach September 30th, I wanted to share the top ten resources I've come across. The following resources all relate to historical policies/legislation that have long-term impacts on Indigenous communities. 4. The Conversation (2023). The Vatican just renounced a 500-year-old doctrine that justified colonial land theft … Now what? [Podcast] https://lnkd.in/gzM3WTvz This podcast does a great job of diving into the language used by the Pope when he renounced the Doctrine of Discovery and the implications of this decision. 5. Chippewas of Rama First Nation (2015). Justice Murray Sinclair on the Royal Proclamation of 1763 [Youtube] Justice Murray Sinclair on the Royal Proclamation of 1763 - YouTube https://lnkd.in/gWSFqyR6 Justice Sinclair explains the nuances of the proclamation and how the Crown has consistently failed to uphold its promises to recognize Indigenous self-determination and land title. 6. Deerchild, Rosanna (2019). What's Métis scrip? North America's 'largest land swindle,' says Indigenous lawyer. [Podcast] https://lnkd.in/gvcbthBq A great overview of the scrip system and it's role in displacing Métis communities. 7. Tassinari, Patricia (1995). Broken Promises – The High Arctic Relocation. [Documentary]. https://lnkd.in/ggSD8pxV A heartbreaking documentary follows the stories of Inuit families who were forcibly relocated and examines the long-term implications of broken government promises.

Director of Communications and Stewardship | Writer and Creator for Catholic Mission, "Always ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks...for a reason for [our] hope" (1 Peter 3:15).
How many times have those of us who manage social media seen others — or had to ourselves — backtrack from what we posted or published because of neglect of a bigger picture, even unintentionally? It can definitely be an experience of rightful humility. ✍There's a "sense of humility on the journey of learning truth” and passing it along! This is one of many many treasures in the podcast linked below entitled "Bill Schmitt on Catholic Journalism," posted by the McGrath Institute for Church Life today. I appreciated the parameters laid out that can be not only applied to Catholic journalism in a news sense, but Communications, Content Writing, and Social Media posting in general. Here are several more highlights from the episode that I think can serve that purpose: ✍ The search for truth must begin with prayer. ✍"The heart of information is persons, and not the speed with which it is delivered or the impact it might have." ✍Information is not inseparable from formation. ❗ ✍We have a vocation to discover truth in ourselves and others. ✍We must avoid giving in to the urge to post to simply fill space quickly with over simplifications. ✍ We are all journalists in the world today, with access to social media, etc. ✍We can pray together that God make us instruments of peace, providing journalism (content, communications) for peace and not words that cause harm. The podcast also highlights Pope Francis' words in 2018 on World Communications Day. Listen for yourself for more food for thought and consider what we ought to be conscious of in seeking to be "servants of truth..." in Catholic writing and content. I'd love to hear what sticks out to others on this topic! Mr. Schmitt, I'll be looking up your new book, "When Headlines Hurt, Do we Have a Prayer?" Thank you for giving me much to ponder.
Happy Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time! Additionally, it's International Journalist's Remembrance Day, and we encourage you to listen to this episode of our Church Life Today podcast: "Bill Schmitt on Catholic Journalism." https://hubs.la/Q027JpJt0
