There is one big policy change the Navy could make right now that would save money on shipbuilding, recapitalize room for enhanced lethality on warships, and promote greater esprit de corps in the service. The change? Get rid of the wardroom. Yeah, I said it. Make one dining facility on naval ships and bases for everybody, regardless of rank, to come together and share a meal. With respect to our British allies, the Navy doesn't need an aristocracy anymore. The veneer of pomp around the Navy's officer corps serves no one. Enlisted sailors are often more capable, competent, and credentialed than their officer counterparts. Separate dining facilities are a joke that perpetuate a "holier than thou" stereotype in our service. Other branches have figured out how to eat together, and probably fight better together because of it. Officers need to get out of their comfort zones and expectations of preferential treatment. In the battles to come, we need all the space we can get for warfighting systems - and we need to build the kind of resilient teams that can only come when everybody eats the same meal, in the same place, at the same time while we're underway. Spoiler alert if you're a naval officer still reading this far: nothing requires you to eat in the wardroom today. Grab a tray and head to the galley.

A great article that resonates with me deeply. First as a product of this eight decade absence and second as matter of deep personal reflection on whether or not I (would have)personally lived up to the ethos the article espouses. It is common for warring great power militaries to fire and replace numerous commanding officers after poor combat performance, whether they be unit-level leaders, or senior flag and general officers.” It will take courage to thread the needle of serving and preserving the bureaucracy for the good of the institution it represents v. breaking humpty-dumpty in a way that won’t allow for putting him back together again for the good of making Halsey’s. Doug Verissimo, Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic participated in a panel discussion, April 9, at the 2024 Sea-Air-Space Convention to discuss modernizing our efforts to improve and increase warfighter readiness. He addressed the capability of the carrier strike group and the ability to adapt for worldwide operations.   “I am unabashedly a huge fan of the carrier strike group and the capability they bring. My view in generating readiness, and how we generate readiness across the carrier strike group fleet, is that it’s an all-hands, all-team effort. You can really see how that integrated certified force, that gets put together by the fleet commanders, evaluated by the carrier strike groups on either coast for the emerging threat, is developed, expanded, understood, and fed back to those folks who are going out [to deploy] to be the most capable," said Rear Adm. July 1953 at the old #SouthBoston Naval Annex, part of the #Boston Navy Yard, facing northwest. The photo shows fifteen aircraft carriers from the #USNavy Atlantic Reserve Fleet, with USS Leyte in the foreground, shortly before she was converted to an antisubmarine carrier. The other fourteen are small escort carriers built on modified cargo ship hulls. Most of the ships in the picture were less than ten years old, but the pace of technological change, the rapid transition to jet aircraft after WW2 and the dawn of the missile age meant that these ships were now thoroughly obsolete for their original purpose. Nevertheless, due to the Cold War, many of these ships were kept in reserve until the late 1950s. The Boston Navy Yard was established in 1801, mostly in #Charlestown. The South Boston Naval Annex was created in 1920. Boston Navy Yard as a whole closed in 1974, most of the dock space filled in, and converted to mostly warehousing space on several new streets including Seafood Way. Dry Dock No. 3 is still one of the largest drydocks on the east coast. #history #technology #engineering

I was a firehose nozzleman on submarines. Knowing how to put out various types of fires is one thing.
