AIRTEC attended The Patuxent Partnership (TPP) Defense Summit this week. It was another great local opportunity to support the important mission of TPP and engage with leaders in government and partners in the defense contracting industry. We often forget in the day-to-day grind and hustle why we do what we do but this was a great reminder of the big picture and the imminent threats that could be around the corner and why we must continue to work together and work through contracting, procurement, logistics, and budget challenges to be ready to protect the freedom we all enjoy. TPP is a non-profit member organization that works with government, industry, and academia to advance education through STEM-based initiatives, advance technology through events, and advance science and technology through the exchange of ideas, information, and data. TPP is a vital component of fostering workforce development. AIRTEC has been a member since 2019 and participates in their Southern Maryland 2030 Workforce Development Program which provides paid internship and apprenticeship opportunities in the area. This collaborative effort is with the Naval Air Warfare Center Aviation Division (NAWCAD), the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, and many educational partners including local colleges and schools, as well as industry. We look forward to having talented students from this internship program join us in Summer 2024! Located in the AeroPark Innovation District at the St. Mary's Airport, a few miles from the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, AIRTEC has been supporting the critical missions of customers for more than 30 years. Third week into my DoD-SkillBridge internship at Black Rifle Coffee Company, what I have learned so far: 1. There IS happiness and purpose outside of the military….don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. 2. #DODSkillbridge is quite possibly the greatest DOD program ever. The peace of mind that comes with it is insane. 3. Finding the right fit is so important. Don’t settle for a job just to settle. Find the right culture and climate for YOU, hit the ground running, and add value. 4. The civilian world has completely different lingo and workflows (in most cases I’d venture to say). Focus on learning terminology, concepts, and ask lots of questions! Shout out to Kenny Green, PMP for helping me acclimate. 5. Coffee from grenade mugs is just that much better 💥

It’s National Apprenticeship Week! 📣 Did you know Defence is the largest single employer of apprentices? There are so many exciting apprenticeships available for new recruits and existing personnel within the Armed Forces. Working in Defence, you can develop skills for a successful career. AB Crookes is an apprentice Engineering Technician (Marine Engineering) (Submariner). This apprenticeship has allowed Crookes to gain practical, hands-on experience alongside theory learning. He says, “If anyone was thinking about doing an apprenticeship, then I would say ‘do it.’ There’s a massive push for people to go to university, but realistically you can go there for three or four years to study the theoretical side of engineering, but in that period, you might not have gained much practical experience of the role you’ll be going into”. #NAW2024 #SkillsForLife

Boeing Aerostructures Australia, Australia's sole designer and manufacturer of advanced composite aerostructure components for commercial airplanes, is investing in apprenticeship programs to address skills shortages and changing demographics. Recognising the significance of on-the-job training, Managing Director and a former engineering cadet at Boeing Mick Sorrenson highlights the company's commitment to growing the talent pipeline, “If you're passionate about aerospace, it becomes all-encompassing and all of a sudden you realise you've been here for 35 years and not ever really thought about having to change because you love what you're doing.” The initiative includes a women in aerospace program aimed at increasing female representation in manufacturing. Boeing plans to expand its apprenticeship program to include 40 apprentices over the next four years, fostering diversity and creating a workforce that better reflects the community. Situated in Melbourne's Fishermans Bend, Boeing Aerostructures Australia boasts a rich legacy in Australian aviation dating back to its predecessor companies in 1927. This heritage encompasses the production of aircraft that served the Royal Australian Air Force during World War Two. Apprenticeships, especially ones linked to trade certifications or even STEM degrees, and leading to upward economic mobility have never been more beneficial to people and society than they are today. Great video by BAE communicating opportunity, diversity, and hope. What other companies are out there supporting talent development through training and education that should be applauded? Need more emphasis placed on talent development over talent management.

From K-tech Apprentice to Receiving Controller ⭐ Meet Signe, a remarkable young talent at Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. Starting as a K-tech AS apprentice at 17, she's now a Receiving Controller, ensuring the quality of parts for F-35 aircraft and advanced defence systems. Her journey is a testament to dedication and hard work. "It's incredibly gratifying to receive this level of trust. It’s a significant responsibility. We need to inspect for any general damage, check the quality of paint and masking, ensure that parts are manufactured correctly, and most importantly, confirm that they meet our delivery standards,” Signe says. We believe in nurturing talent and providing pathways for growth. Signe's story is just one example of how apprenticeships can lead to fulfilling and impactful careers.
