It’s a question most dressage riders will have asked themselves at some point in their riding career: What do judges focus on when assessing different types of movements in a dressage test? That’s what advanced dressage judge Irene De Wolf and I, with the help of two talented horse-rider combinations, and equipped with a Tobii eyetracker, wanted to find out. Here’s a couple of highlights (in slomo, for ease of viewing):  🐎 Change of rein: Irene pays particular attention to the horse’s footfall, and how the rider’s aids affect horse. Her focus travels from the horse’s feet to the rider’s leg and hands and back again. Now and again, you’ll notice how Irene switches her gaze to different points of reference around the arena, to check the accuracy of the line.  🐎 Centre line: Here, assessing the straightness of the horse, also in relation to the centre line, is key. Irene first looks for relevant reference points, such as the struts on the back wall, and then keeps checking the alignment between the horse’s head, feet and the rider.

You don't always associate dehumidifiers with the equestrian world but here are just a few ways in which a dehumidifier can benefit equestrians: Maintaining feed quality - damp, unheated feed rooms can become a breeding ground for mold. Mold in feed can go undetected and be one of the causes of colic and respitatory disease. Rug drying - cold, wet rugs can play havoc with the horse's natural warming response. Cold horses will use valuable energy trying to keep warm and this can lead to a lack of condition requiring more feed and possibly unwelcome vets bills. Another side effect of damp/mold can be skin conditions such as ringworm. Add to this the fact that mold causes fibres to prematurely break down and rot so rugs may not last as long as you would hope. Tack/Equipment Storage - keep the damp away from your lovely leather tack and other equipment. As above, mold can cause premature breakdown of natural fibres and will be a problem for your tack. Staff clothes drying - if you are a professional yard with live in staff, having them hanging wet clothing up to dry can create a damp problem within their housing. Having a drying facility for yard wear can prevent a number of damp problems. Laundry - dehumidifiers can be a more cost effective way to dry laundry and are particularly effective with delicate fabrics of items that can be tricky to dry. Add the competitive edge - if there are a number of yards in your area, a drying facility can help give you the competitive edge.
