It’s the hardest thing to keep up with! 🔥 And literally there can be no comparison. Your on your own track of solving your challenges, be it : > college tier > non-tech background > fewer hiring opportunities > facing rejections > no referral support Given the fact you’re left with no choice, but to strive for good things to align. The “learning” in itself has become a WHOLE big challenge. Figuring out genuine & quality resources, out of a pool of resources to learn from. #itfield #corporate

Request to all #HRs and #Hiring_Managers, please don't hire from specific Ed Techs #ONLY, that's what leads to #Ed_Tech_Scams, sooner or later. I know in some cases, you (company HRs and Managers) might not be bothered about them (candidates), but you will surely be bothered about this 👇 While very rare Ed Techs will build software engineering habit and attitude in candidates, most will teach mugging up DSA problems and fixed LLD, HLD scenarios, consider such people joining your company, your product will go for a toss and you will see business loss 🤷♂️ Let the Ed Techs do the teaching part, but as far as hiring is considered, don't do biased hiring, it's a loss for both employees and companies, directly or indirectly for sure. Software Engineers and techies, like/comment and share with relevant HRs and Hiring Managers ☝ #HRs #Hiring_Managers #Stop_Biased_Hiring #Let_Candidates_Become_Self_Dependent_For_Finding_Job_At_Least

#Techlayoffs. Serious news for currently enrolled #computerscience students, or a temporary blip not worth worrying about? What do you think? There is updated data in this article. https://lnkd.in/g4H95BvP I think about #engineering #careers of young #Indians. When will we see proliferation in AI-enabled tools that #teach non-CS #skills? #Mathematics, #statistics, #stressanalysis, etc? With millions of people with #smartphones and internet access, what will that imply for #degrees from #universities?

The skillset required to get a PhD* is insanely broad. You have to absorb vast amounts of information, identify patterns and gaps across years' of other scholars' research. You have to articulate research questions, design and execute studies to get at those questions, convince a panel of people who know a lot more than you do that it's a good idea. You have to marshal resources to actually run the study, which usually means tapping an often fledging network for favors and help. You have to manage your data, analyze your data, and explain your data. You have to write your results in a 200-300 page report. And you have to execute this 2-3 year project (<cough> or longer <cough>) with essentially ZERO external motivation. No one but you cares if you get your PhD. If you don't have that drive, you are ABD** for life. * This really focuses on the skills for a dissertation, not taking into account the Masters Degree and additional 2 or 3 years of coursework that got you there. And it isn't even counting the domain knowledge of your field lol!!! ** All But Dissertation
i say i do data, but really im just a poet who can prompt | to accentuate > to disrupt | two of my favorite words? resonate & orbit
Ed Tech CEO: "Here are all the reasons why I wouldn't hire a #PhD." He offered me a job three days later. Keep reading to find out why. #TranslateAcademia If this resonates, please share! --- It was September 2020. My wife, three kids (one brand-new baby), and I had moved across the country from Washington to my parents' basement in Maryland. I was organizing a series of panels for #HireHigherEd, one of which was what ed tech companies wanted to see from people like me when it came to job applications. Jennifer G. Beech, Ph.D. tagged a CEO of an ed tech company. I slid into his DMs. His response: "Sorry, I don't connect with recruiters." Me: "That's great! I'm an unemployed academic. Let's chat." We found some time to have a video chat, and this is the first thing he says to me: "I have a pile of work on my desk, and I don't want to do it. I'm sitting on my deck, and I thought of you." The next thing: "Here's why I wouldn't hire a PhD." I listened to his reasons. I won't list them here. You probably already know. (Lots of them are the reasons so many academics are leaving in the first place.) Here's what I said: "I completely agree with you. But there's one difference: that was before COVID. Now you have people like me who don't want to leave education but have to." I could tell I got him thinking, so I put my PhD in rhetoric to use: "I don't even know what you do at your company, but give me three months, and I'll be one of the best employees you've had." "Really?" he questioned. "Yes. Really. This is the nature of someone who gets a PhD. They are driven people who know how to learn fast and work hard." "Interesting," he said. We wrapped up the call. Three days later I get a text from him while burning my hand getting pizza out of the oven: "I have an idea. Do you have a minute?" "I gotta make a call," I told my family, and I slunk to my basement-storage-unit-turned-office. I called him. "What do you know about data," he asks me. "I wrote about data, but I didn't really do data." "Ah, well that's something you can learn." "Wait," I said, "Are you offering me a job?" "Well I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, but yeah... wait... do you know what we do at our company?" "Nope." He then explained his company, what they do, and how he thought I could add value. Two weeks later, I interviewed for the job. Two weeks after that, I had a job offer. Two weeks after that, we left the basement and moved to Tulsa, OK. Ten months later, I left that job for a variety of reasons. Here's what I learned though: 1) I can learn fast. Like really fast. 2) Even though I don't know tools, when I learn to use them, I can run circles around others who've been using them longer. 3) How much you throw yourself into your job has little to do with sector and a lot more to do with how you value your mental health. 4) I'm worth a lot more than what both academia and my first post-ac job paid me. 5) I really love #data.

Happy Friday!! How's everyone's Friday going? So im sitting here, going through different job openings and I noticed many postings where they specify a requirement of having a bachelor's degree without any particular area of concentration. It got me thinking 🤔: What, in your view, does it truly signify when someone holds a "bachelor's degree" with no specific concentration? What kind of assumptions or impressions do you believe recruiters and hiring managers tend to form about an applicant with a degree compared to someone who doesn't hold one? Are there any assumptions at all? To be clear, I am not referring to the open roles that actually require a specific skill set to be successful in the role such as computer science or software engineering. I'm genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives. lol Lets Talk 🤗 #jobsearch #careergrowth #careeradvice #customersuccess

Few people want to talk about this trend, but as PhDs we can't hide from the data. Layoffs are brutal right now, and not just in the biotech industry, which means there are more and more experienced people in the industry job market right now. At the same time, universities are pumping out more and more PhDs with no plan for getting them hired in industry and with no available academic positions to hire them into. This results in highly trained PhDs taking poverty level positions as postdocs and adjuncts for years. It also often results in unemployment of these highly trained and highly capable doctors who can impact the world through their research and their work - if they knew how to get hired and if they knew what options they had outside of academia. Instead, the pile up of PhDs who are unemployed, underemployed and/or exploited in very low paying positions continues. If you have a PhD and you're reading this, getting hired will never get easier. As the numbers show, the pile up is getting worse. This means the time to take your career into your own hands is now. Remember, you're more likely to be seen as overqualified rather than underqualified. Stop obsessing over your skills and start obsessing over how to communicate them to Bachelors-level hiring managers. Obsess over how to execute a job search properly. This is your way out of this pile up. Remember your value and learn how to communicate your value. #jobsearch #careerdevelopment #careers #resumes #negotiating #gethired #jobtips #phd #phds #postdoc #postdocs #phdlife #phdchat #phdjobs #phdcareers #phdstudents #phdstudent #cheekyscientist

I’m often asked how and why I entered the job space that I did, Scientific Sales. The why is easy. The science and the people. Throughout my career I’ve never stopped learning, partly out of necessity, mostly out of curiosity. There’s been no shortage of new concepts, of new challenges, of new approaches to novel and age old questions. Throughout it all there is a sense of community. I would not be in the position that I am if it weren’t for my managers and mentors. Not to mention the rest of my many brilliant and supportive colleagues. I would not have the sense of fulfillment I do if it weren’t for the brilliant and dedicated scientists I work with. In an inherently dynamic and evolving field, I’ve come to learn that it’s the relationships that last. Through layoffs and job changes, promotions and hiring, those you go the extra mile for will remember. In the spirit of community and learning, I’m going to try and be more active on LinkedIn. I want to continue to build my network and bring interesting and thought provoking content to the forefront. That being said, I'm eager to hear the topics you all are interested in learning more about. Please feel free to message or connect with me if any of this resonates with you. I'm greatly looking forward to the conversations to come. #ScientistsHelpingScientists #ProfessionalGrowth #BiotechCommunity #BiotechJourney #science #biotech #layoffs #uncertainties #CGTJournalClub #cellandgenetherapy
