I really enjoyed participating in this broad conversation about #mining #governance from the prism of artisanal mining. Massive honor being on the panel with Paul Clements-Hunt, appreciated John Barker, JD, CCEP, CHPC, CHRC, CHC and James (de Gaspé) Bonar, Ph.D, PCC for the opportunity.
We addressed a range of governance related questions:
1. What are the implications of ASM for large mining companies? Context is that artisanal miners were often there first, sharing of land concessions is a reality and artisanal miners are stakeholders that extend from neighboring communities
2. What strategies make sense for LSM’s to enable #asm formalization. What does win/win look like and why does it matter so much?
3. Why is ASM formalization important for downstream customers? What implications are there for corporate reputations
4. What are the governance implications of formalization. Transitioning miners into coops where predictable business relationships become a norm requires robust governance
5. Why does formalization matter for the #energytransition? Volumes need to grow
The bottom line - governance needs to reflect the fact that miners and communities are central. Formalizing ASM makes commercial sense, delivering a combination of dignity, #sustainabledevelopment and productivity. Although formalization has been very limited to date and sad realities the norm far too often, now is the time for change. Everybody wins when governance creates strong win/win stakeholder focus.

Mining projects have outsized social and environmental impacts. This webinar explores the integration of corporate purpose and strategy in mining from a stakeholder relationship perspective, diving specifically into relationships with artisanal miners who cohabit land concessions associated with large mining projects.
