📰Today, Health Ministers from across Australia will meet in Perth. It will be the first time that health ministers in all States and Territories will be able to discuss abortion care, in a context of nationally decriminalised abortion access. In May, the bipartisan Senate inquiry on universal access to reproductive healthcare concluded that abortion access in Australia is a postcode lottery. If access to abortion in Australia is a postcode lottery, State and Territory health budgets are the powerball. State and Territory activity funds decide who, when, where and how regions provide healthcare. In the coming months, we’ll see State and Territory budgets released. One by one, we will see if and how they address abortion access. Read more from our Head of Policy and Research Bonney Corbin in the The West Australian about what we should expect out of today's meeting. https://lnkd.in/gPZ5V6se #Abortion #Contraception #AusPol #ReproductiveJustice #ReproductiveRights #AbortionIsHealthcare

On Friday, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed a new bill that will affect the lives of every woman and girl in our beloved state. In a vote of 29-7, lawmakers voted to make Mifeprestone and Misoprostol, the two drugs administered for medical abortion, a controlled substance. Louisiana is now the first state in the nation to criminalize the right to safe and private reproductive health. What does this mean for women and girls of color in the South? It means that throughout the region our rights are under attack: from the doctor’s office to the ballot box. Unfortunately, many bad policies are first born here. In 1865 W.E.B. Dubois wrote, "As the South goes, there goes the nation.” His statement rings true to this very day. The systemic inequalities experienced by communities of color across the nation are felt most deeply in the South, as well as legislation and policy that reinforces it. In 2024, it is imperative that we advocate and support the work of organizations filling in the gaps and standing up for change. WFS and our partner network are sounding the clarion call for us all to pay attention to the sweeping policies that are being advanced in Southern states that threaten the health and security of women. Healthcare should not be criminalized. Your advocacy and philanthropic giving is necessary to create change and protect our rights across the country. #WFS #ReproductiveJustice #Change #Advocacy #HealthcareIsNotACrime #ShiftTheSouth https://lnkd.in/gci6WHzs

BE PREPARED! TRUMP PROMISES TO LET STATES MONITOR WOMEN'S PREGNANCIES TO PREVENT ABORTIONS Now in effect in Florida is a ban on abortions after 6 weeks of pregnancy. Setting aside the question of what magical event occurs at 6 weeks that justifies this timeline, there are what are potentially more important issues (more important because, as difficult and wrong as it may be, women still have the option to travel to another state to obtain an abortion). What are these more important issues? State bans on women obtaining abortions in other states (eg, a Florida woman traveling to New York to obtain an abortion at 12 weeks pregnancy) and Trump's threat, if reelected, to permit states to monitor pregnant women so as to punish them and/or their doctors should the woman receive an abortion. The surveillance state may soon materialize for women. https://lnkd.in/g_fM83tX

In two weeks the Supreme Court will hear a pivotal abortion case focusing on mifepristone – a safe, effective medicine used in medication abortion that is now under threat. Why is this #SCOTUS case so critical? 1️⃣ Medication abortions represent more than half of all U.S. abortions. 2️⃣ Medication abortion is a lifeline for many, especially in states with restrictive abortion laws. 3️⃣ Mifepristone restrictions hit marginalized communities hardest, worsening existing barriers to health care. 4️⃣ This case threatens the FDA’s authority to make science-based decisions independent of political interference. Tell the U.S. Supreme court: Protect access to mifepristone. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/eUS7ujQV

We started planning an initiative to limit government interference with abortion, after the overturning of Roe v. Wade on June 24th, 2022 because we read the writing on the wall. Since then, we’ve seen exactly what we feared would happen come to pass. Florida politicians have passed an extreme law, with no real exemptions, that bans abortions before most women even realize they are pregnant. Floridians will have a very important choice in November, to uphold the extreme, near-total abortion ban for generations, or vote Yes on 4 to limit political interference in our private medical decisions! Pledge to vote #YesOn4 at yes4fl.com/pledge and get the voter support resources you need to have your voice heard!
