We are seeing the impact of the #SCOTUS #chevronruling. Several states were already challenging the Biden Administration's rule clarifying that the Affordable Care Act protects transgender people from healthcare-related discrimination (including gender-affirming services) based on sex as a protected class inclusive of gender identity. Now, the SCOTUS ruling gives less power to federal agencies and they are no longer the default authority interpreting statute, which is being used to further justify this challenge to the new rule. This is an alarming trend we could see replicated across different arenas and is one to watch! #LGBTQ #LGBTQhealthcare

We may have reached the end of Pride Month, but our work to improve care for the #LGBTQ+ community continues year round. The collection, sharing, and use of robust data is critical to identifying and meeting the unique health needs of the LGBTQ+ community. However, there are systemic challenges that impede our ability to fully leverage this data. By improving the collection and application of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data, advocating for its importance, and enhancing the diversity of our provider network to make data sharing safer, we can help make care more equitable for LGBTQ+ individuals. A new commentary in JAMA explains the benefits of and barriers to recent federal guidance that encourages states to add sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) questions to their Medicaid applications. This federal effort to encourage the collection of SOGI data from Medicaid patients is a foundational step towards advancing LGBTQ+ health equity, according to a new commentary by SPH's Kevin Nguyen, PhD. “Such federal guidance represents a significant step forward in improving the data infrastructure necessary to understanding potential inequities in health needs, access to and quality of care, and health outcomes for LGBTQ+ people served by Medicaid,” the authors write in the commentary. Program Coordinator, Addiction and Public Policy Initiative at O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law
“Nearly half of all Americans will have a behavioral health issue in their lifetime, from a mood disorder to a substance use problem. The scarcity of behavioral health professionals is undermining people’s ability to get timely care. In 2021, fewer than half of people with a mental illness were able to access timely care; those with substance use disorders were even less likely. Many rural areas and economically stressed cities have few, if any, behavioral health care providers. For example, in 2018, more than half of the counties in the U.S. did not have a practicing psychiatrist. People covered by Medicaid and, to a lesser extent, Medicare struggle to find providers that accept their insurance, in large part because of low reimbursement rates, particularly in Medicaid. Underserved groups like people of color, non-English speakers, and LGBTQ communities often struggle to find appropriate services. As is the case with many other health care specialties, the demographics of the behavioral health workforce often do not reflect those of the people they serve.” #medicaid #behavioralhealth #healthcareservices #substanceusedisorder #lgbtq #bipoc https://lnkd.in/gXquEKKH

Although Disability Victory isn't able to endorse candidates in 2023 since we don't have an endorsement process yet, I have to say that the disabled candidate I am personally MOST excited about in 2023 is Seattle City Council candidate ChrisTiana ObeySumner. Take a few minutes to read this coverage on their campaign. It's up to each and every disabled candidate how much they want to disclose about their disability, but I truly appreciated how much ChrisTiana shared about the barriers they've encountered on the campaign trail and how they've adapted to them. This kind of transparency is sometimes a difficult choice, because we know that ableism influences voters' perceptions. However, we can't work to change voters' attitudes and break down barriers when we don't talk about them. I appreciated sharing my perspective on disabled candidates in The Stranger: Disabled people are adaptable. We’re creative. We’re problem-solvers. And we’re resilient because everyday we navigate a society that is not built for our needs. If those aren’t leadership qualities, I don’t know what is.” https://lnkd.in/eJFZdAQb #Elections2023 #Disability #Leadership
