What comes to mind when you think of The Hague? For many it is synonymous with international justice. It's where war criminals are sent to answer for their crimes. But what you might not know is that it is also the centre of a growing ecosystem of charities, NGOs and humanitarian groups who are striving for a better world. Last month I went to The Hague to speak to a number of international organisations about the work they do in the city. But this first article is about the city itself, and how it became renowned for peace, as well as justice. This initiative is about empowering our youth to become agents of peace in their homes, schools, and communities. An article that raises some good questions for bp, and other energy companies, regarding investments in Nagorno-Karabakh. Given the influence such investors have, their actions impact far beyond the scope of the immediate investment. This is not to say investments in such regions cannot occur, just that they need to be undertaken in a manner that makes the investors a positive force for human rights protection. This is not just a matter of legal compliance, but also one of demonstrating an ability to adapt principles of good practice to each situation which will have its own dynamics. #businessandhumanrights #bp
