Utilize Donation and Redistribution Programs: Establishing partnerships with food banks, nonprofit organizations or even work release centers can help redirect surplus or close-to-expiry products to those in need. This approach not only reduces waste but also contributes to the welfare of local communities. We had the pleasure of donating 1,389 lbs. of cereal bars to Bridges of Pompano Beach with the assistance of Global Foods of Las Vegas. That means a lot to me since I spent over a year in Bridges of Orlando and understand how important food donations were to our health and wellness. There are many ways to give back and stand up for causes bigger than us. So let’s talk about circular economy…its non existent! Kmart selling things for $0.10. I confess I did buy cookies and hot chocolate for 10 cents as it was treats for my kids and food. But all that waste! Also, I think donating it all to charity rather than the novelty/gimmick to entice people in to spend even more money on “stuff” would be a better thing to do. There were boxes of glassware for $1 which could furnish homes for the less fortunate. Hopefully it doesn’t all just end up at the tip. The Big Food Project If you haven't heard of this incredible charity, they collect food from supermarkets, wholesalers, and manufacturers that would otherwise go to waste. This food is then distributed to more than 100 food banks across The Fylde, helping those in need and crisis. Their vision is to create communities where everyone has access to nutritious food and no food goes to waste. Through The Big Food Project and The Big Food Truck, in partnership with Blackpool Food Bank, they rescue surplus, nutritious food and redistribute it to over 14,000 people each month via their network of 80+ partner organisations on the Fylde Coast. Second Harvest Inland Northwest has been living sustainably for over 50 years. A core part of our work, getting food to people facing hunger is the rescue of food that may otherwise go to waste. Today we have a program called Grocery Rescue that matches neighborhood foodbanks with grocery stores, we rescued 12.5 million pounds of food in 2023. We also work with many food producers to get donations. Our total food distribution in 2023 was over 35 million pounds and most of that was rescued and donated. As we enter 2024 our sustainability efforts and commitment to feeding people facing hunger continues. In fact, we are leaning in even more aggressively to get the most out of our operations with Zilch – an effort to waste less and feed more. Since the beginning of the year, we have added 19 new organizations that we are helping. There are lots of ways for the business community to be a part of this effort through sponsorship and volunteering.  #sustainability #Zilch #helpingeachother

Our charity, The One Box recently released its new Annual Report outlining the program's impact through 2022. Leveraging our existing national supply chain and purchasing power allowed The One Box to deliver a box of fresh produce with a retail value of more than $25 for a total cost of $14.42 per box. In doing so, The One Box distributed over 1 million kilograms of nutritious fresh fruit, vegies and staples to over 2,500 households in need. The model depicted here, where a company can utilise its skills, resources and know-how can be adopted and implemented by other organisations. It started as a routine disposal task… (just another day, or so we thought) But in that huge warehouse, we asked ourselves “Can we use these extra sanitizers for something good?” This is a story of how we turned what could have been waste into a wellspring of community support.. A client had too much sanitizer and it was costing them. They asked us at Happen Ventures for a clever way to deal with it without throwing it away. Here’s what we did (and we love doing this) We teamed up with local charities that needed cleaning supplies. We gave them the sanitizer and showed them how to use it right. This turned what could have been trash into something that saved lives. The results were astonishing… 1) Boosted community health during the pandemic 2) Over 10,000 liters of sanitizer repurposed 3) Halved disposal costs for our client On a personal note, this project really taught me a lot. It proved how key it is to think outside the box, especially in tough times. Watching our team come together and find innovative solutions was incredibly inspiring.
