February is Black History Month. What can you do to celebrate? Well, I'm so glad you asked! ✊ Invest in Black-owned businesses Do you follow a Black creator on social media? Sign up for their Pateron! Or go grab a bite to eat at a Black-owned business. ✊ Take time to learn about the Black experience There's tons of documentaries and movies illustrating the experience of Black Americans. Having trouble choosing one? My recommendation would be the documentary-- 13th. ✊ Amplify Black Voices Share posts from Black creators, engage with their content! One of my favorite authors/creators is Rachel Cargle and during Black History Month, she encourages those that follow her on social media to do the work instead of her doing all the heavy lifting, and in doing so, will posts prompts for followers to take time to research and dig into for themselves. 👊 Celebrate, but don't ask for labor If it was your birthday and someone asked you to bake your own cake, it might be a little confusing, right? Let's not put the work on people of color to educate. But let's definitely celebrate the many contributions that Black Americans have made to this country.

As we kick off Black History Month, we're reminded of the invaluable contributions, resilience, and cultural richness of the African American community. This month isn't just about looking back; it's about recognizing the journey, the struggles, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equity. Although it is a time to celebrate, it is also crucial to acknowledge the disparities that persist in homeownership for Black Americans. Despite progress, Black homeownership rates in America still lag behind other groups, a reflection of historic injustices and discriminatory practices. Let's continue to advocate for fair housing policies, support initiatives that promote economic empowerment, and work towards a future where everyone has equal opportunities to achieve homeownership and financial security. Join us in honoring the past, celebrating the present, and shaping a more inclusive and equitable future for all. Together, we can make history. https://lnkd.in/gNB2aJ4G

🖤Join us in celebrating Black History Month at the office! 🖤 Let's honor and recognize the countless contributions made by Black Americans throughout history. The history and experiences of Black people are an integral part of America's heritage and have shaped both our past and present. The criminal justice system has long been intertwined with the oppression of black people, from slavery to the mass incarceration we see today. As public defenders, we recognize the responsibility we hold in fighting for justice and equality for all. Black Americans face disparate treatment at every stage of the criminal process, from traffic stops to sentencing. We must remember that the U.S. Constitution, when written, excluded people of color, and racial discrimination was enforced by the courts. It is crucial for public defenders to understand this history of struggle to effectively advocate against injustice. Throughout history, people of all backgrounds have joined together to fight against injustice, and we must continue this legacy. Black history matters every day, not just in February. Together, we can work towards a more just and equal society.

Experienced Leader, Speaker and Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Health Care, Human Services, and Public Safety
As we approach February and Black History Month, it's important to ensure that our organizations are creating meaningful and impactful activities. One way to do this is by doing some up-to-date research on topics like DEI, anti-black racism, and affirmative action. LinkedIn is a great tool for this - there are countless free thoughts shared by black professionals that can provide valuable insight into what is currently on the minds of the black professional community. It's important to remember that the black community is not a monolith, and there are a variety of perspectives and experiences to be considered. While we should always include black people in the planning of any org events and activities, it's also important for professionals to arrive informed on the latest thinking from experienced thought-leaders. This is expected behavior for professionals. This behavior should be normalized for people-related activities as well. There's no need to announce or recite what you read, but it's helpful to consider if your planned activities hold space for these conversations. Are there opportunities to reflect on black history in the light of the ongoing challenges many black people face? Let's make sure we're taking the time to do the research and create meaningful activities that truly honor Black History Month.

Today marks the first day of Black History Month. Recognizing and celebrating both the historical and current contributions of Black People in our communities, and in the FDR field, is something we must aspire to do every day. We must be intentional about creating space for Black voices and amplifying the experiences of the individuals we work with and the families that we serve. By doing this, we not only deepen our understanding of one another, but we create greater opportunity for connection and collective growth. Black History Month allows us an opportunity to pause, reflect, learn, unlearn and expand our knowledge of what it means to move toward a just and equitable society. This month FDRIO will be hosting a unique and important in-person workshop - Attuned: Practical Ways of Embracing Diversity in Professional Settings & Everyday Life. This workshop hosted in downtown Toronto is a practical DEI training that breaks down the compexities of racialized trauma in a relatable way. Topics include: - Developing Relational Attunement - Understanding the 4 F's (fight, flight, freeze, and fawn trauma responses) - Understanding Collective Trauma Learn more and register now: https://lnkd.in/g9XmTA_x *EVENT IS POST-PONED*
