It is always good to see posts that reassure LEO professionals that they do possess skills and experiences that translate into the needs of private sector industries.
So I've been a police officer for 17 years. I grew up in a police family and married a police officer, who also grew up in a police family. Which means my experience of being around police officers spans my lifetime. Basically I'm an expert. Strike that! Not an expert but I understand a few things about this realm from various vantage points. I have an observation to share... We don't give ourselves enough credit! Many police officers, or as I like to say, "Law Enforcement Professionals" possess a variety of unique and valuable transferable skills. Some of my immediate peers are at, or nearing retirement. Which means thinking about their next chapter. A common theme I hear when talking to some of my peers, is that they don't have any skills outside of police work. Some don't feel like they have professional options outside of being "the police". This is frustrating to hear because being in this field requires so many skills. It's not just "police work", whatever that means. It's... ✅️Conflict resolution ✅️Problem solving ✅️Relationship building ✅️Ability to make decisions ✅️Navigating difficult personalities & situations ✅️Building trust ✅️Information analysis ✅️Project management ✅️Working independently & on teams ✅️Resource identification ✅️Keen listening skills ✅️Interpretation and application of the law ✅️Managing stressful situations ✅️Customer service ✅️Creative thinking ✅️Community collaboration And so much more. The excessive bullet points could continue. Law enforcement professionals are tasked with responding to and managing the problems, concerns, and care of people, no matter how what that looks like in the moment. People are complex. Accomplishing a feat of such magnitude, while simultaneously managing your own life, requires an elevated skill set and copious levels of patience and coffee. Regardless of how one may feel about law enforcement, the profession exists. On any given day, law enforcement professionals are deploying skills that can translate into many other fields. We are a wealth of knowledge and experience. Some of us develop training, some run programs, some teach, while others specialize in technology. Many of us are rock solid community relations specialist. Higher ups are dealing with budgets, personnel matters, resource allocation, complaints, politics, the list goes on. Moral of the story...to my law enforcement professionals...When it's time to think about the next chapter, please don't sell yourself short. You have a ton of skills. Seriously. To the professionals in other fields, perhaps consider how someone with a law enforcement background could fit into your organization. We've seen a lot, done a lot, and can handle a lot. Many of my friends will retire in the next 3-5 years. Give them a cool job. Thanks! Here's a pic of my partner Ted Schienbein and I collecting toys for our holiday toy drive outside our local Target. #police #policeofficer #transferableskills #communityengagement

Criminal Justice case managers play a crucial role in the criminal justice system. It's important not to confuse us with traditional law enforcement officers. As a criminal justice case manager, I worked with offenders to address their needs and mitigate risk factors, such as substance abuse and lack of education or employment. We monitor compliance with court orders and parole conditions while providing support and referrals to other services. The challenges we face include managing safety risks and working with resistant clients. However, the opportunities to reduce recidivism and promote reintegration make it a rewarding career. Let's not overlook the hard work of Criminal Justice Case Managers. In my last role, I managed a caseload of 400+ offenders. #readytowork #casemanagement #government #criminaljustice #management #customerservice

🗣 While well intentioned the below information is not always a realistic option as explaining a criminal record to potential employers can be a re-traumatising experience, especially for individuals whose conviction histories are deeply rooted in past abuse and trauma (which is the case hearing first hand experiences from my peers tell me and is reinforced by research). 👨⚖️ You have to explain yourself to the courts - you do your time and or conditions and then you have to continually explain yourself for the rest of your life it seems where is this ongoing discrimination and judgement factored into sentencing. It grossly hinders the ability to be able to take on meaningful, skilled roles where you can contribute in a positive way to society. All of the people that I know with living experience have a multitude of knowledge and value that cannot be taught in text books and are kind and compassionate despite the horrific treatment and trauma that they have had to overcome. 🛑 This process often forces us to relive painful memories and confront stigma and judgment, which can hinder reintegration and emotional healing. Here are key points for employers and people working within Government departments like "Blue Card Services" to consider when discussing this issue: 👩🎓 We are PEOPLE not a charge on a piece of paper, we are not the sum of our offences. 💔 Having to recount past offences can trigger painful memories and emotions, leading to re-traumatisation. Are you having these conversations with us that are framed in a psychologically safe way and offering support during this process? The fear of being judged or rejected based on their past can exacerbate feelings of shame and worthlessness, which are often prevalent among trauma survivors. The stress and anxiety associated with disclosing a criminal record can impede our efforts to rebuild their lives and achieve stability. In my experience many employers may not fully understand the complex, trauma-related factors that contributed to the individual’s criminal behaviour, leading to unfair assessments and decisions - Decisions based on judgment and personal bias as opposed to selecting the best person for the role. I want to strongly highlight the importance of trauma-informed approaches in hiring practices and the need for employers to create supportive environments that facilitate rather than hinder rehabilitation and reintegration. Many employers claim to be fully inclusive when they are not, this needs to change. We need hiring practices that consider the deep-seated challenges faced by individuals with conviction histories. Have you been discriminated against when applying for a role due to your criminal record? If you feel safe and comfortable to do so please share your thoughts below (if not please send me a DM always happy to chat). Are you an employer that wants to know how you can make your employment process trauma informed and inclusive lets have a conversation.
We know having a stable, well-paying job is one of the leading factors for enabling a person to successfully reintegrate into their community after contact with the criminal justice system. Please support our Second Chance Jobs program. https://lnkd.in/gCuhRPX #reintegration #secondchances

In The News: In Tulsa, Oklahoma, a concerning shortage of police officers, with 160 vacant positions and a population of 411,000, has intensified public safety concerns. Mayor G.T. Bynum addressed the negative portrayal of officers in the media, emphasizing its impact on recruitment and the careers of existing officers. This shortage is a national issue, reflected in a 4% decline in law enforcement jobs from March 2020 to August 2022. Challenges include low applicant numbers, poor applicant quality, background check disqualifications, generational differences, and increased scrutiny on law enforcement. At GoJoe Patrol, we recognize the need for tailored security solutions amid this shortage. We do this by offering various services to enhance community safety without aiming to replace the police. After being told by major national news organizations is no “crisis” in police officer retention or hiring, we now have a declared “crisis” by US Dept of Justice. Are we coming to a point where we have no choice but to hire security officers to do jobs of law enforcement? Is a solution to lack of cops a reassessment of how we train, pay, equip, portray our current law enforcement? And understanding that dramatically fewer cops have considerable public safety issues? Is law enforcement at a literal crossroads per US DOJ? Or is a better question; is public safety at a crossroads? What Comes next? https://lnkd.in/eREUrBrm
