I did Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity sober and had a much better time because of it and if I were reading this after a week of drinking while contending with delayed or cancelled flights home to my family I’d say “stfu LinkedIn douche” under my tequila breath and exit the app immediately. But the differences, for me, were interesting. A few observations below if you’re curious. 🍺 I made time my bitch: Out early and home late. My days were fuller and more fulfilling. Even got a run it. (I hate running.) 🍺 People plus plus deluxe edition: I filled the additional time with meeting people. New. Old. This has always been what I love most about Cannes. 🍺 New conversations with old friends: I’m doing a 90-day experiment to see what happens when I remove alcohol from my life. Lots of reasons. Nothing particularly sexy. Keen to see if I was leaving anything on the table (spoiler: yes—more than I’d like to admit). But it’s not something I enjoy talking about in group settings. It sucks the joy out of a moment with laughs and stories shared over clinking glasses. I’ve minimally tracked the experiment on TikTok because it was that sort of content that helped me take a closer look at habits. In speaking one-on-one, though, I was surprised to learn just how many people had their own alcohol-free stories to share. People I’ve known for years revealed vulnerable sides to themselves I’d never seen before. Big cyber nod and respect to Mark Pasetsky. 🍺 There’s zero pressure: You’re not a teen in college. No one will pressure you to drink or care that you’re not drinking. And if they do, you’re hanging out with the wrong people. It is so damn hard though, given the constant flow of liquid—but I did wrongly assume peer pressure would be prevalent. 🍺 No anxiety or guilt: It’s a week-long conference on a massive time difference for US workers and your day job doesn’t go away. There’s a lot to balance and you’re working around the clock. Gaping holes would appear in Cannes-past where drinking-related activities meant pushing emails, decision-making, and other work. I leave Cannes this year knowing I’ve given it my absolute all to support the team on the ground and at home as best I can. 🍺 Late nights were the same: Sans booze, I thought for sure I’d be heading home on the earlier side. ERRONEOUS. I found I wanted to stay for the atmosphere. Turns out you run more on adrenaline and a jet lag than Minuity.

That sounds awesome Oliver! As a nondrinker who first learned about the world of sobriety 20+ years ago while working for a rock star (like, a real one, not someone who crushes a client presentation #nodis), I was lucky to have never felt self-conscious about not drinking cuz just google how many sober rock stars, actors, etc there are out there - nothing uncool about it. (Disclaimer: I believe everyone's relationship to alcohol is different & that it's a very wide spectrum, not a binary issue. i.e. not everyone who abstains is an "alcoholic" - not that there's anything wrong with that)

This is one of the best recaps I have seen of Cannes 😊 I have drastically reduced my drinking but in this type of situation, struggle with the pressure I put on myself - and end up drinking. This is encouraging to see the benefits you saw from a week sober. Hope you get home safely!

My (nearly) 7 years of sobriety came from a similar 90 day challenge... and I cannot fathom how I used to make it through events any other way. The freedom on the dance floor you feel at the end of the night when every one else is partaking - it's so underrated! Also - the longer you go and the more vocal you are the more of a magnet you will be for people who need to see themselves in you to give them permission to explore the same. Keep it up! Excited to follow your journey!

Love it! After being pregnant and not drinking for well over a year (kept the sobriety going while breastfeeding) I thought damn this is something everyone should experience sometime in their life. I had so much clarity. Even now, I still drink, but I'm good with two beers or a glass of wine. I used to feel I needed to get blitzed to have a good time lol.

I cut alcohol out of my life seven years ago and my only regret is not doing it much sooner, for all the reasons you mentioned.🧋

I love this so much. I stopped drinking 18 months ago and life is just this… clearer, better and more enjoyable. A sober cannes is certainly a more productive one!

I went stone cold sober for nearly a year to train for a half marathon, and WOW I was not expecting so much to change, more the less to not want to go back to old ways. I was also pleasantly surprised literally no one cared if I drank or not. Zero fuss.
