WHY WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP MATTERS?
As a woman leader, I don't take for granted the opportunities, resources, and support from my family that have enabled me to reach this point.
I dare to dream of being a leader, fully aware that the true representation of India includes the majority of young women entrepreneurs and leaders at the grassroots level who face challenges in establishing themselves where there are no spaces or cultures that support women in showcasing or nurturing their leadership aspirations.
Despite the grim statistics regarding women in leadership positions in India, I am glad that Indian women continue to carve out niches for themselves across various sectors.
Throughout history, Indian women have proven that we can be exceptional leaders and entrepreneurs. We work with humility, learn from women in other nations, and set benchmarks for future generations of women leaders.

One of my core areas of interest is looking at legacy businesses and their models and studying their background. One such is the story of Lijjat Papad.
Lijjat Papad, a name well-known to all, stands as one of India's biggest cooperatives run by women operating under the motto of 'Sarvodaya', which signifies 'progress for all', embodying the principle of collective ownership.
In Lijjat, there are no employees; instead, every woman who joins the business is referred to as Lijjat Ben (Lijjat Sister), highlighting the concept of collective ownership where each member has a stake in the company, i.e. every individual shares profits and losses of the organisation.
This method is key to fostering a culture of excellence and their story, truly exemplifies the power of women's leadership.
Here is a summary of their tale for a quick dose of inspiration :)

At #IGFMumbai, Manoj Ladwa, Founder, India Global Forum said,
“There are 4 leadership lessons from the bold decision to revoke #Article370.
1️⃣ Leadership: At the core of any leader whether in politics or business conviction plays the most important role.
2️⃣ Teamwork & Women Empowerment: The simplest lesson is to make sure you have women in leadership. Having and selecting the right people is very important.
3️⃣ Planning: meticulous planning to the last detail
4️⃣ Trust: to bring it all together is trust. Having trust in your team, the cause, and yourself."

Bias is one thing that gets spoken about a lot and is true too - we see it all the time.
However, another part of the story, is the age old debate between equity and equality. We want equity or fairness, but maybe that requires something over and above that can and must be done for women to get them to the level playing field - trying to be consistent and fair in what resources or ecosystem we give men versus women, may never give women that level playing field.
Whether it’s maternal or familial responsibilities, or responsibilities set in tradition and festivals and what not - women have always had more to juggle.. And if organisations can respect that reality, have policies that don’t make women chose between one or another - it’s only then true meritocracy can take over and growth comes to those who deserve, irrespective of gender.
Point here being, not everything may be solvable just by a change in attitude - some real changes may need to be normalised in times to come if we hope for a more gender diverse tomorrow!
Todays front page headlines of Economic Times brings the point yet again to the forefront of fewer Women Leaders making it to top in India.
The age old investments into leadership development programs for Women will never do enough to plug the “leaking pipeline”.
I can’t stress this point enough, we need to do more on sensitizing the men in this country who still hold majority of mid to senior level positions.
Additionally, let the narrative not just be around the percentage of women intake at entry and lateral levels but also be about focusing on retention of women at all levels!
This is so refreshing and inspiring. Often when speaking of women in the workplace or leadership, the aspects of being able to get along, collaboration, etc. are highlighted. We also often talk of grit, and these are all no doubt very important aspects of working with teams and colleagues.and succeeding.
But, recognising and celebrating the commitment to the larger goal, the commitment to excellence; at the cost of being perceived difficult, and having the courage to own that and navigate that, is what we need to also talk more about.
And this is what #inspiringinclusion is truly all about. Having women in the workforce across levels, and having them show up as their true selves.
More power to these women leaders, and may the tribe grow.
