ONE's EU Director Emily Wigens recently sat down with Euractiv Italia to share why this month's G7 Summit was a missed opportunity for G7 leaders to commit to African partners. "It was all talk and no action...The increased promise of partnership between the G7 and the African continent included over 60 references to Africa in the communique after the summit; and despite all of that, there were very few specifics on what new financing, if any, was going to be made available to underpin these commitments." The G7 summit in Italy last month was much about blaming China for all international conflicts and geostrategic questions ranging from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, South China Sea and climate crisis to cybersecurity and “overcapacity”. It was the United States promoting its fabricated international consensus that China should be held accountable for all crises. This shows the real color of global politics shifting from international cooperation toward bloc formation, from economic globalization toward economic protectionism, from global green efforts to tariff increase on EVs and solar panels, from qualitative industrialization to wrong notions of overcapacity, from rule of international law to military misadventures, and from multiculturalism to so-called white supremacy.

#JustJustice "Our G7 Presidency actively engages the Global South and specifically Africa. We consider our Presidency as an opportunity to enhance the dialogue with our partners. The G7 group is open to requests and expectations from the rest of the world. A concrete signal given by the Presidency it is in enlarging the number of countries in the outreach session. We are promoting a more equitable partnership in line with the Mattei Plan. We should engage more with Africa, it is even more imperative for Italy because of our proximity and interests in the continent." The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is a vital component of the United Nations, responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It consists of five permanent members with veto power (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms. The future relevance of the UNSC is a topic of ongoing debate and speculation. Several factors may influence its relevance in the future: 1 - Global Power Shifts: The geopolitical landscape is constantly evolving. Emerging powers like India, Brazil, and South Africa have called for reforms to the UNSC to reflect the contemporary distribution of power more accurately. Changes in global power dynamics could potentially impact the UNSC's relevance. 2 - Multilateralism vs. Unilateralism: The future of international relations could swing between a more multilateral approach, where institutions like the UNSC are central, and a more unilateral approach, where countries prioritize their own interests over international cooperation. This will depend on the policies of major powers. 3 - Conflict Resolution: The ability of the UNSC to effectively address and resolve conflicts will play a significant role in its relevance. Its success or failure in preventing and ending conflicts will influence its standing in the international community. 4 - International Cooperation: The UNSC's relevance also depends on the willingness of its member states to cooperate and find common ground on global issues. Differences and conflicts among the permanent members can hinder its effectiveness. 5 - Reform Efforts: Ongoing efforts to reform the UNSC, including discussions about expanding its membership or changing the veto system, may affect its future role and relevance. Ultimately, the UNSC's relevance in the future will depend on how well it adapts to changing global dynamics, addresses the world's most pressing issues, and maintains the support and cooperation of its member states. Predicting its exact fate is challenging, but it will likely continue to be a significant player in international diplomacy and conflict resolution for the foreseeable future. #UNSC #UN #Multilateralism #Unilateralism #Global #Reform #Veto

Dedicated to advancing policy and business insights at the nexus of geopolitics, energy transition, and the environment.
📈 If you're wondering where the heads of G7 leaders are these days when it comes to foreign policy, one place to start is the annual G7 summit's communiqué. The 2024 gathering in Italy just wrapped over the weekend and, since adopting a long-form communiqué in 2021, four terms have gone from the margins to the very core of G7 messaging: Security, Energy, China, and Cooperation. The words appeared a total of 55 times in the 2021 communiqué, compared with 225 times this year. 🤝 In the latest document (https://lnkd.in/dEZJaU8v), Security, Energy, and China generally allude to some of the Group's top challenges, contextually spanning a range of interrelated issues including wars in Ukraine and Gaza, climate change, and economic competitiveness. Any one of these challenges alone would be more than a single government could effectively tackle on its own. The encouraging news woven through the communiqué is explicit recognition (42 times) of the need for more international Cooperation. Here's hoping words lead to more concerted and constructive collective action. #geopolitics #climatechange #energytransition #energysecurity
