Reflecting on a recent workshop on accessibility led by Chris Nuernberger I'm reminded of a valuable lesson learned during a past project. Our task was to design an app for +65yo 👵🧓individuals to register for the COVID vaccine. Initially, our assumption was that many older adults would need assistance navigating the app and making the registration process. However, through interviews and research, we discovered a surprising truth: many felt confident enough to complete the registration process independently.😎 This realization was eye-opening👁👁. Instead of assuming limitations, we should focus on empowering users and designing intuitive experiences that cater to their needs. It wasn't about making others do the process for them, but rather making the process accessible and user-friendly for everyone. We need to remember the importance of designing with empathy and inclusivity in mind. What are your thoughts or experiences with designing for accessibility? I've got a new Smashing Magazine article out: Mobile Accessibility Barriers For Assistive Technology Users: https://lnkd.in/dWHxfGDn One of the most fun parts of my work is learning from our community of assistive technology users. Everything I know about accessibility from a technical standpoint is enhanced and made clearer through understanding the user perspective. In this article, I share all that I've learned from assistive technology users about mobile accessibility barriers. When you approach accessibility from a lens of user needs it's so much easier to understand what to do and how to prioritize the work. #Accessibility #InclusiveDesign #MobileDevelopment

💬 "The best way to identify inclusion is to start with recognising exclusion" I hadn't managed to get along to any events so far this year so it was great to head to UX Crunch on Thursday for an evening of Designing Beyond Accessibility. It was amazing to hear from designers who are making real, positive differences through their work and beyond. Lots of inspiring talks that gave us so much food for thought for not only how we design, but also how we research and engage with users in a more mindful and inclusive way. Something that often feels so overlooked. Also found it particularly awesome to have a genuine focus on designing for older adults too, and how we can escape a crisis-driven default approach where all solutions start to feel like assistive tech. 1 in 4 people will be 60+ by 2050 (including me 👀) so this isn't tomorrow's problem, it needs to be front of mind today. I left for my train feeling motivated and reassured that so many others are also striving and advocating for inclusive design. More evenings like this please 🙏 #InclusiveDesign #Accessibility #UXCrunch #UXCommunity
