This week I started rewatching 'Suits' and I was reminded of Harvey's mantra: 'Anyone can do my job, but no one can be be.' And I think this resonates deeply in the world of recruitment and team dynamics. Each employee brings a unique blend of skills, experiences, and perspectives that are irreplaceable. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to focus solely on skill sets and overlook the invaluable qualities that make each individual distinct. When we talk about the need to upskill or reskill our workforce, don’t forget we’re talking about human beings who have committed years and decades of their lives to the work they do today. That kind of commitment brings with it a complicated mix of identity, value, and self worth. We can’t overlook the traumatic impact that occurs when we inadvertently send a message to employees that they are a means to and end or no longer matter. And, keeping that top of mind doesn’t mean ignoring the critical need for people to adapt and grow their skills. It simply means we maintain a humble recognition of how valuable our employees are and a firm commitment to the time and resources required to build bridges to help them get where we all collectively need to go. Organizational performance is a team sport, and you only win when everyone believes they’re a valued member of the team.
