Community Organizing Coordinator at ProDESC | #humanrightsdefenders #protection #ESCR #factfinding #training #corporateaccountability | Helping communities build COLLECTIVE POWER to fight for their RIGHTS. ⚡️
As we approach the year's end at ProDESC, we're taking a moment to reflect on our collaborative journey with communities and organizations across the Global South. Here's a glimpse of the insights we've gained throughout the year in our mission to enhance the security of human rights defenders fighting for Climate Justice. 📏 Tailoring Risk Analysis: Recognizing that defending human rights in the Global South involves high risks, we have learned the importance of tailoring risk analyses. Not all organizations or communities face the same levels of danger, and so a nuanced approach is crucial. 🗺 Contextualizing Threats: Rigorous risk analysis has shown us the significance of contextualizing threats. This enables organizations and communities to identify their specific capabilities and vulnerabilities, providing a foundation for effective security measures. 🕸 Intersectional Approach: Recognizing the intricate connections between diverse forms of discrimination and oppression, an intersectional approach has become fundamental. By embracing intersecting identities and experiences, we have been able to cultivate a more comprehensive and inclusive security framework. ⭕ Holistic Security Measures: Emphasizing the need for holistic security, at ProDESC we have adopted the practice of incorporating both preventive and reactive actions. This includes addressing various security dimensions such as i) physical, ii) digital, iii) psychosocial & collective care, iv) communication & advocacy, & v) legal. 🤝 Community Safety Best Practices: Some of the best practices we have incorporated into community safety efforts include fostering internal discussions on security, safeguarding workspaces, documenting and analyzing security incidents, showcasing advocacy work, and building alliances and support networks. 🏭 Corporate Accountability Approach: By delving into the workings of corporations and ensuring their responsibility, we actively contribute to fostering a safer environment for human rights defenders. 🔢 Simplicity in Security Protocols: Contrary to common assumptions, We have learned that many organizations and communities don't always need elaborate security protocols. Often, having 5 to 10 well-defined agreements proves to be more effective than a comprehensive plan. It's been an empowering year committed to advancing collective security and the well-being of human rights defenders. Anticipating even more impactful collaborations in the year ahead. Here's to a thriving & safe 2024 for all! 💫 🌍🤝 #YearInReview #CommunityBasedSecurity #GlobalCollaboration #GlobalSouth #HumanRightsDefenders #HumanRights #ESCR #ClimateJustice [Snapshot from our recent visit to northern Brazil] .

"Built-in, not bolted on" applies to legal infrastructure as well. DEI initiatives presently face intense legislative scrutiny. Russell Reynolds convened industry leaders to address this conflict without compromising security against discrimination. One tactic is highlighting blind spots in equity integration. For instance, accelerator programs for specific underrepresented groups can inadvertently make them targets for legislative attacks. While the intention is positive, vulnerabilities are exposed during this wave of legislative attention. #DEI #RussellReynolds #SeniorLeadership #Legislation #Csuite

10th story - Empowering Change Agents to Combat Online Child Sexual Exploitation “ For me, this work isn’t just about advocacy; it’s about being a hero. I see myself as a protector, someone who stands up against exploitation and fights for the safety of girls and young women.” Hello everyone, My name is Eath Chanrita, and I am proud to be a member of both the Girls for Safety Online (GSO) and the Girls Leadership Council (GLC). Through my involvement with these groups, I’ve had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of girls and young women. Recently, our team began a campaign called “Together for girls and young women's safety” This campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of OCSE and equip individuals with essential digital safety tips. We’ve taken our message to Tul Ampil High School and also spread it online. Along this journey, I’ve discovered newfound responsibilities and honed my skills in presentation, public speaking, bravery, and confidence. But I don’t want to stop here—I want to do more. My vision extends beyond_ I aspire to take our campaigns to provinces and mobilise many more Change Agents. Why? Because I firmly believe that educating people on OCSE can help them be careful when they are online and our role as Change Agents is the main key to stopping OCSE amongst our peers. So, to everyone reading this: Let’s rally behind our Change Agents. Let’s provide them with the support and motivation they need to fight OCSE.💪

📢 Calling all professionals in the social justice and human services fields! Did you know that among all the survivors that Cast has ever served, 88% are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC)? That's a staggering number that highlights the disproportionate impact of systemic injustices on marginalized communities. In 2023 alone, almost one-third of the clients Cast served were Black, and the statistics surrounding their experiences are even more alarming. • 57% experienced forced criminality • 34% had previously been arrested • 63% were unhoused at the beginning of services • 42% reported adult sexual assault, and 45% reported domestic or family violence. These numbers are significantly higher than the overall client population, further emphasizing the urgent need for change and support for these communities. At Cast, we are committed to providing Training & Technical Assistance to professionals like you who are dedicated to creating a more equitable and just society. We believe that by equipping ourselves with the necessary knowledge and skills, we can significantly impact the lives of those we serve.
