How do you grow the seed of a brand into a reality that starts a movement? We are thrilled to be working for the 3rd time with Robbie Cape on his new venture Mt. Joy, a new farm-to-counter with a focus on irresistible fried chicken sandwiches and regenerative practices. We all believe that making craveable chicken sandwiches will unleash a market demand to overhaul the US industrial food complex. For the past 5 months, our first mission has been to implement his ambitious vision through the brand. With the exceptionally-talented Mt. Joy team – a chef, a restaurateur, a farmer, a technologist, and many more – We started by developing the brand positioning and promise, including the tagline "Good tastes better." From there, we found ways to express the values of joy, sustainability, and transparency in everything from restaurant and food truck design to signage and packaging, even air dancers – all of which had to communicate that joyful vision without being preachy or overpromising, The vision is to build a fast-casual chain serving simple, craveable, affordable food, grown and delivered to consumers in a way that is healing to the environment, humane to animals, and compassionate to all the workers who bring the supply chain to life. Best of all, this collaboration aligns perfectly with our values, where our focus is on design for impact. We are impressed and inspired by the team's commitment for impact and are excited to be part of Mt. Joy's growth as we change the world. Innovation tips from the Easter bunny! 🐰 Back in 2002, I had the privilege of leading the Easter egg business for one of the world's biggest & best chocolate makers 🍫 Needless to say, it was one of the most enjoyable jobs I've ever done - as close to Willy Wonka as you can get!! 🎩 It was also a huge learning ground in key innovation skills: Project management ➡ after all, the date of Easter is not going to move if you're not ready! Project anticipation ➡ we needed to design & develop the products 18 month in advance Cross-functional teamwork ➡ zero way to be successful in manufacturing, selling & distributing a range of 40 new products, in a tight 3-month time window, without a high-performing cross-discipline team! There were 3 fundamental innovation learnings from that role that have stuck with me ever since: 1️⃣ Deeply understand Purchaser AND Consumer In many innovation projects, you must take into account the needs of BOTH the purchaser AND the end-consumer. In our case, the Easter eggs needed to delight the parents (so that they would buy) AND the kids (as the recipients of the gift). And so it was critical to deeply understand what both of these stakeholders desired in order to succeed. 2️⃣ Romance the pack "I love how you have romanced the pack" - some feedback I will never forget from the Global Marketing VP when she saw one of my Easter egg designs. Since that day I've learned that there can never be any valid excuse for poor packaging design - it's just lazy. Packaging is one of the most critical touchpoints in your relationship with the consumer, and one of the biggest opportunities to make your brand shine. 3️⃣ The power of partners With an operation of the immense scale of Easter chocolate, we were not able to manage absolutely everything in-house. And so we built strategic win-win partnerships with other organisations. Big City Fans: Instead of trying to impress everyone, Happilo is focusing on winning over people in big cities. Key to Success: Making sure people love the taste of their healthy snacks, so they keep buying them. Happilo wants to change the idea that healthy snacks aren't yummy.
