October 11th is National Coming Out Day, which has been recognized since 1988 in the US, but is now recognized in many other countries including Canada. Coming out is when an individual shares their identity with others. This day is important because coming out is the act of being open about oneself and one’s identity, whether to family, friends, or the entire world. It is important to know that the coming out process is different for everyone, for some folks it is an experience of acceptance, while for others it can be a traumatic experience. When someone comes out to you, they are placing their trust in you and are being vulnerable and authentic. Remember to: 👉🏽 Thank them for sharing their identity with you and for trusting you. 👉🏽 Respect their confidentiality and privacy. 👉🏽 Don’t make assumptions, or ask invasive or personal questions. 👉🏽 Ask them what support, if any, they need. 👉🏽 Educate yourself on how to be an ally to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. #NationalComingOutDay #Allyship #Inclusion #Community
