This week marked the 10th anniversary of the creation the masterpiece campaign "The Epic Split.", one of my absolute favourites of all time. I read the “behind the scenes” dairy of one of the co-creators. Were they scared? YES! Did they know they would succeed? NO! Did they take a leap of faith to break new ground in a very traditional space? YES! Did it pay off? YES, big time*) *) within 48 hours, The Epic Split had 10 million hits on YouTube. The day after its release, The Epic Split was the most shared video in the world.   As I have written about before, pushing that lunch button should NOT feel comfortable. It SHOULD feel a bit scary. It’s a natural human defence mechanism to feel scared when we enter unchartered territory. But if we don’t - if we choose safe - we will stay average.     So, what was it that made this campaign so successful & in what way did it break new ground? 🌈 REDEFINED CONVENTIONAL PERCEPTIONS ABOUT WHAT B2B CAMPAIGNS COULD ACHIEVE The campaign spoke to the audience’s minds AND hearts. Instead of focusing solely on test centres & functional product benefits, they chose to demonstrate the trucks’ stability and accuracy by having Van Damme perform the split between two reversing trucks in a visually impressive way, which was more human and engaging than we were used to seeing in B2B commercials. 🛑 JUXTAPOSITION The juxtaposition of an action hero in a slow-motion movie created a striking cinematic effect. Choosing Van Damme, a character typically associated with fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping action scenes and placing him in a context where time seems to slow down (accentuated by Enya’s soothing song “Only Time”), was a stroke of genius. ❤️ EMOTIONAL CONNECTION The campaign served as a timeless reminder that the road to success is often paved with daring feats & unwavering commitment, urging us to push our boundaries & reach for the extraordinary. The 53-year old Van Damme opens the scene by saying: "I've had my ups and downs. My fair share of bumpy roads and heavy winds. That's what made me what I am today. Now I stand here before you. What you see is a body crafted to perfection. A pair of legs engineered to defy the laws of physics. And a mind set to master the most epic of splits”. 🌍 TRANSCENDED LANGUAGE AND CULTURE The global triumph of this campaign lied in its ability to transcend language and culture. It reminds us that innovation and boldness are universal concepts that resonate with people around the world. 💫 CREATED FOR HUMANS, NOT FOR BUYERS. Give something, don't just sell. . . "The Epic Split" was a testament to the idea that teamwork & synchronisation can lead to breathtaking results, inspiring us to strive for greater collaboration & unity. It also dared to defy the ordinary, showing us that even the most audacious dreams can be achieved with precision & determination. It gave us hope. Here's a tip for networking at conferences... It’s better to attend industry days or pay for VIP access instead of general admission passes. Why? Higher quality people with bigger budgets, and investor dollars to allocate. It’s a higher signal to noise ratio. Instead of having to be 1 out of 10,000 people, you’re 1 out of 200 people and chatting with industry executives, investors, journalists, and more in an intimate environment. The keynote speakers are often more easily accessible. Last week, Crowdcreate attended Industry Day at Electrify Expo, North America’s largest electric vehicle expo. We spent the day talking to industry executives at Toyota, Ford, Volvo, the Wall Street Journal, Hyundai, and more with our client, Getaway Space Inc, that’s looking to build a futuristic EV charging station network. Sustainability is a buzz word and we’ve been helping our clients with marketing campaigns in this industry. Celebrating a Decade of Impact in Public Transportation This April marks a special milestone - the 10th anniversary of Optibus!
