Ethiopian And Qatar TCAS Advisory Shines Light On Somalian ATC Issues Just days after pilots were warned of conflicting air traffic control (ATC) instructions while overflying parts of Somalia, a traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) advisory was triggered between a Qatar Airways Boeing 787 and Ethiopian Airlines Airbus A350 on Feb. 24. The Mogadishu flight information region (FIR) is significant because it acts as a gateway for flights operating from the Middle East and Asia to southern Africa. Since January 2023, this FIR has been reclassified as Class A controlled airspace, a significant upgrade from its former Class G uncontrolled status. However, on Feb. 17-18, New Zealand-based OPSGROUP, which monitors potential risks to airline operations, said it had received “at least 10 reports of aircraft within the Mogadishu FIR being contacted by a ‘fake controller’ on the same frequency, issuing conflicting instructions.” These reports mainly related to climb and descent clearances in the northern part of Mogadishu The cause of the problem is a political dispute between Somalia and Somaliland. Somaliland is a region of Somalia that declared independence in 1991 but is not internationally recognized as a separate country. Tensions heightened on Feb. 13 when the Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority (SLCAAA) said Somalia had “forcibly taken over” Somaliland’s air traffic management. airspace.

⛈️ Weather resilience in #aviation was the focus of the 2024 Flight Safety Forum. 🎥 Dr Hassan Shahidi, CEO & President of Flight Safety Foundation & Ian Goodwin from the FSF European Advisory Committee explain what the #SafetyForum is and how it brings together safety practitioners from across the aviation sector! Organised by the Flight Safety Foundation in a longstanding partnership with European Regions Airline Association #ERA and EUROCONTROL, the #SafetyForum each year highlights a particular safety challenge with a view to fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing and thought leadership. 👉 The 11th edition of the Forum gathered experts to discuss solutions, innovation and methodologies on how to be able to improve #aviation weather resilience in a collaborative manner. This year's Forum theme is also at the heart of EUROCONTROL's #AllTogetherNow2024 campaign, which has made adverse weather management ⛈️ a top priority for summer & our EUROCONTROL #NMOC Network Manager Operations Centre is collaborating closely with weather forecasters to support operational staff in the entire network to better anticipate adverse weather conditions.

Flight Performance Report for April 2024 We recorded 97% schedule reliability with 70% on-time performance. Scheduled 2,658 flights out of which 2,542 were operated. 763 flights were delayed while 211 were rescheduled, with 80 cancelled flights. Our on-time performance and schedule reliability dropped from March by 7% and 1% respectively. This was largely caused by the unfavourable weather that characterised the month of April. However, be assured of our firm commitment to safe and timely flight operations. #BetterDealWithAirPeace

#AviationSafetyDataFeature. Today, we explore CFIT incidents in Kenya. Below is a Heatmap indicating previous incident sites. The heat map reveals areas of concern in the Kenyan Highlands, where several incidents have occurred. Most of these incidents have weather-related precursors, with many happening during months of rain and poor visibility. You can explore the interactive dashboard here: https://lnkd.in/d7ickjJd Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) is a major aviation safety concern, occurring when a pilot unintentionally flies an airworthy aircraft into obstacles, often during the approach and landing. These incidents are often due to a loss of situational awareness. The consequences are severe, resulting in hull loss and fatalities. Prevention includes adhering to SOPs, using Terrain Avoidance Warning Systems (TAWS), and maintaining terrain awareness. I'm thrilled to announce the development of a safety dashboard focusing on CFIT accidents in Kenya. Let's prioritize aviation safety and work together to prevent CFIT incidents. ✈️ #AviationSafety #CFITPrevention #SafetyDashboard Tom Kok Loise Mwangi - Njoroge African Airlines Association (AFRAA) Kenya Airways Jagongo Obara AviAssist Foundation

Changes to North Atlantic (NAT) Oceanic Air Traffic Procedures The North Atlantic (NAT) Operations Forum was held last week in London, U.K. Airlines, Air Navigation Service Providers, State Regulators, Industry Stakeholders and IATA met to discuss and provide recommendations concerning the NAT Vision and future infrastructure requirements, procedural changes and sustainability initiatives. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is excited to announce starting March 2024 there will no longer be a requirement for flight crews entering the North Atlantic to request and receive a separate ATC oceanic clearance and Mach speed assignment. The removal of the oceanic clearance harmonizes the NAT with oceanic airspace, globally. This initiative, driven by IATA, which has been 4 years in the making, will not only enhance safety in the airspace, but it will also allow for airlines to flight plan and enter NAT airspace at economical, variable speed. The removal of the oceanic clearance is expected to save airlines 10 of millions of dollars a year and reduce carbon emissions. You can enjoy the VIDEO 📺 describing the flight crew procedures via the link: https://lnkd.in/d78gAKuf FROM IATA

CEO at Genève Aéroport, an experienced leader with a deep experience in developing and implementing strategies, especially towards sustainable development
Assessing the airport ecosystem: which way forward? The European Commission is reflecting on changing the three most important directives regulating airports (airport charges, slots, ground handling). This finally raises the question which way forward for the airport ecosystem and how to stop being the victims of the past and become actors of the future. This has been discussed with representatives of all stakeholders at the Florence School of Regulation. The results of these discussions are published in belows policy brief with a thought piece on this from me.

Promoting intra-regional connectivity between the capital cities of Africa by creating a single unified air transport market in Africa, as an catalyst to the continent’s economic integration and growth agenda. The Single African Air Transport Market Pilot Implementation Project (SAATM-PIP) is an initiative aimed to accelerate the implementation of the YD and SAATM through an approach which clusters small groups of countries to promote the benefits and address the impediments of implementation. The multi-stakeholder approach is designed to facilitate a harmonized and consistent approach towards increasing traffic through 5th freedom routes between and across the cluster of countries to 30% by 2025. 🚨 Global SAR Hub Highlighted at the IMRF Webinar on GADSS and Aviation SAR! 🌍 🕒 This morning, during a webinar organized by the IMRF, Global SAR Hub was highlighted, emphasizing our role. ✈️🌊 The webinar focused on the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS), developed following the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 in 2014. Based on the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), GADSS ensures that all commercial aircraft of a certain weight and operational type are equipped with tracking and locating devices that cannot be turned off and can generate a distress alert in flight, allowing the aircraft to be continuously tracked until it lands safely or the crash or ditching location is found. 🚁 This new system, coming into effect soon, will be installed on new airliners and later retrofitted on older ones, impacting the global SAR system. During this event, the IMRF emphasized the importance of our work and our contribution to the international search and rescue community. 🌐 We are proud of our role in improving the safety and efficiency of SAR operations worldwide. #SAR #AviationSafety #MaritimeSafety #GADSS #IMRF #GlobalSARHub #ICAO #IMO
