In both my professional and personal lives, I'm surrounded by folks who want to have helpful conversations about race, but aren't sure how to go about it without inadvertently causing harm. At TheCaseMade, we are leaning into that tension, starting with this webinar directed to folks working to prevent eviction. All are welcome to listen in! #reimaginehowjusticewins
Is your community advancing a civil right to counsel for those facing eviction proceedings as one of the many levers you're using to help us get to a future of abundant housing? We applaud you! 👏👏👏 And we want to help you draw in an even bigger bench of supporters and advocates. TheCaseMade, the National Coalition for a Civil Right to Counsel, and New York Law School worked together to offer “Building Support for a Civil Right to Counsel by Anchoring Your Case in Racial Justice.” 💡This resource sets out a framework and sample language you can use as you navigate critical conversations, so we can all get closer to justice. 💡 Because a right to counsel is interwoven with issues of race, having thoughtful, strategic conversations about race and racism is the only way for us to draw forward the new champions we need. Please join us Tuesday, May 21, from 2:00-3:30 pm Eastern for a webinar about this amazing new resource—and how you can join with others to build even more momentum for a right to counsel in your community. Link to registration in comments.

Thanks, Cyan Blackwell, for speaking out on the critical issue of discretionary bindover in response to the Cleveland.com series “Delinquent: Our System, Our Kids," brought to you by all of us in the Greater Cleveland Youth Justice Collaborative We urge judges to limit the use of discretionary bindover and allow our kids to learn from their mistakes and grow. Let's advocate for a justice system prioritizing rehabilitation and positive development for our youth. Watch the entire series here: https://bit.ly/4bwQX1M
This week, the Greater Cleveland Youth Justice Collaborative, made up of Children's Law Center, ACLU of Ohio, and the Schubert Center for Child Studies, issued a third response to the cleveland.com series “Delinquent”. This past week, CLC's Youth Justice Policy Associate Cyan Blackwell covered discretionary bindover – the process that gives judges the option to transfer a child as young as 14 to the adult system. We invite the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office, Michael C. O'Malley and Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court to engage with this series and listen to the voices of our youth.

As summer comes to a close 🌤️, and back-to-school excitement fills the air 🏫, there is one crucial task that is often overlooked: designating legal guardians for your minor children. And, if your kids are going off to college, you’ll no longer be able to make decisions for them or have access to their medical records in an emergency unless your adult kids create Powers of Attorney and Health Care Directives. 🩺 Want to send your kids into the school year with total peace of mind? Read this week’s blog, “Don’t Send Your Kids Back to School Without These Documents” to learn how. I was happy to nominate Professor Costello and the Know Your Rights Day team AND even more excited when they were selected to receive the 2024 Group Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award by Michigan State University. Read more about the student leaders (Gabrielle Boyer Ragland, Josh Cambri, and Valerie Uduji,) that have built the program and how to get involved in the program this year! #MSULAW #gogreen
On February 9, Know Your Rights Day student and professor participants were honored at the Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Awards hosted by Michigan State University. Know Your Rights Day is a workshop-style program that started in 2016 and is designed to teach high school students about their 4th and 5th Amendment rights, and how to handle confrontation with police. Throughout the years, many MSU Law students have volunteered their time to help Cass Technical High School students understand their constitutional rights when interacting with law enforcement. King County Superior Court Judge David Keenan ’08 and King County Superior Court Commissioner Jonathon Lack kicked off this year’s First Year Fellows Program with a presentation titled, “Bias: The Promise and Peril of a Legal Education.” They discussed lesser-known racist elements in the history of government institutions in Seattle, King County, and Washington as a whole. First Year Fellows is a year-long program for 1Ls with monthly workshops on social justice topics such as poverty, cultural competency, and public interest careers, with the goal of helping students think more about and develop the skills for a career focusing on social justice. #lawschool #lawstudents #lawschoollife #lawstudentlife #publicinterestlaw #socialjustice #equity #racialjustice
