"It is rarely recognized that the conduct of police may be related in a fundamental way to the character and goals of the institution itself—the duties police are called on to perform, associated with the assumptions of the system of legal justice—and that it may not be officers who are good or bad, so much as the premises and design of the system in which they find themselves." Jerome Skolnick, an esteemed academic who taught at prestigious institutions like Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, and New York University, revolutionized the understanding of the police "working personality" with his groundbreaking work, "Justice Without Trial." Skolnick emphasized the deep-rooted connection between police behaviour and the inherent characteristics and objectives of the justice system. He highlighted that the effectiveness of law enforcement is intricately linked to the framework within which officers operate, rather than solely to individual officers' moral compass. This insight underscores the significance of systemic factors in shaping police conduct and performance. #PoliceReform #JusticeSystem #LawEnforcement #Skolnick #JusticeWithoutTrial #PoliceCulture

The great Hannah Scifres and I wrote this article to discuss how U.S. cities grow (or do not) following State killings of private citizens. Our piece follows the impact of Akron Police Department's killing of Jayland Walker, how the community responds, and how the police respond to the community. The pathways for graduates of Mount Royal University’s Criminal Justice program are many and varied, from policing to practicing law and from community outreach to corrections. So it is of note that currently two current Sergeants-at-Arms in provincial legislatures are graduates of the program from the same year. This was such a refreshing conversation across ideological differences at the highest levels of US government. My favorite parts were: Justice Barrett (1:30:25): "Forgiveness and apology are not emotions, they are decisions." Justice Sotomayor (1:43:05): "Start always by finding the best in people... If you spend the time looking for [the good] it is harder to demonize that person and their arguments." Justice Barrett (1:45:30): "I challenge the students to make a deliberate choice to seek out people who think about things differently from you and spend time with them... We have to create opportunities for those kinds of dialogues to become practiced at them." Don't miss the part where they discuss how the Supreme Court uses deliberate tactics similar to a "well run preschool" to maintain civility (starts at 1:21:20). https://lnkd.in/gmq8H2x2

Honored to join this esteemed panel of lawyers at the 99th Annual National Bar Association Convention to discuss the importance of implementing effective methods that ensure police accountability. We will present different perspectives from Civil Rights Attorneys, Professor, Prosecutor and Inspector General, and why this requires a multi-faceted approach involving police and sheriff's departments, government agencies, community organizations, and the public. By fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and mutual respect, these measures can help build trust and ensure that police officers serve and protect their communities effectively and justly.

*NEW BLOG POST* In her thought-provoking post, 'Being More Considerate: Mandating Consideration of Restorative Practices During Sentencing,' Articles Editor Kyla Schweber explores the transformative power of restorative practices in the justice system. She highlights Vermont's pioneering role in integrating these practices at the state level and argues for a similar approach nationally. Kyla proposes a federal act to mandate the consideration of restorative practices in sentencing, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the victim's wishes and the defendant's accountability. This approach, she suggests, could bring more fairness and effectiveness to the legal system, reducing recidivism and promoting healing. Discover Kyla's vision for a justice system that balances accountability with compassion.
