Enjoyable visit to Aerospace Bristol today where the last Concorde ever to fly, registration G-BOAF, is preserved on public display. My first time ever seeing one of these incredible beauties. An absolute marvel of engineering.
Times have changed a great deal since the 1960s when Concorde was designed, with the aviation industry now focussed on cost, economy, efficiency and sustainability, rather than speed and luxury. The remarkable speed of Concorde has been replaced with the efficiency and range of modern twin-jets such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350, allowing smaller and medium-sized airports to grow their destination offering on routes with a ‘long and skinny’ commercial profile. Point to point is increasingly replacing hub and spoke made possible by the aforementioned models as well as earlier innovations such as the magnificent Boeing 757 which remains the workhorse of many Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Continental routes with American carriers today. Speed is much less of a consideration than it once was.
Do you think we will see commercial supersonic aviation again? My prediction would be ‘No’.
