🌱 "Sustainability" is a hard-to-define concept because it encompasses everything and is timeless per its definition. "Innovation" is equally mysterious, but like sustainability, the challenge in defining it succinctly lies in its potential to blend diverse and even contradictory concepts, taking something that was previously unknown (or below our awareness radar) and making it tangible. Having examples of "innovation" as a reference point (either in practice or empirically) can help us to better understand it, creating clearer connections that resonate with our mental models and mindsets. At BIC Services, sustainability is more than just a buzzword – it's a core value that drives our operations. Here's how we're making a difference:

This is an interesting piece on a so-called Nordic model of corporate sustainability. But, a closer look at the selected cases here reveal that they are either foundation-owned or majority state-owned, with one exception: Chr. Hansen. But Chr. Hansen is more than 20% owned (with similar voting rights) by Novo, another foundation-owned company. (There is Ikea as well, but I'd hesitate to call Ikea a sustainability champion due to its business model which relies on mass consumption and quick furniture turnover). As Andreas notes, the Nordic countries have their own sustainability challenges. For me the key lesson here is to look at the ownership models of companies, perhaps rather than countries of origin. Foundation- and state-owned companies have a lot more room to maneuver than publicly listed ones, when it comes to sustainability. And there's increasing evidence that at least foundation-owned companies tend have stronger sustainability profiles than publicly listed ones.
