Back in late May this year Kate Robertson of BAE and John Ridge of the MoD attended an innovation showcase where the topic of Innovation through Collaboration and Ecosystem (ICE) was discussed and analysed via keynotes, panel sessions and roundtables. Kate chaired the SME Ecosystem panel session and John delivered the closing keynote. Roll forward to DSEI in mid-September and I was fortunate to be able to host a Fireside Chat with both Kate and John where they jointly discussed the formal collaboration of the FCAS Industry primes (BAE, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo and MBDA) and the MoD Defence Innovation Unit that John is the Director of and the wider MoD innovation teams and programmes that John supports. The shared aspiration being to combine forces and collaboration in 2024 to create an SME ecosystem engagement for the FCAS programme that coheres all the great work, programmes, support, knowledge and commercial mechanisms. With a collective desire by both the FCAS industry partners and the MoD Innovation units to co-create, innovate and collaborate with startups and SMEs to drive value for all and create an environment where capabilities can be dual-use and multi-domain. In effect, a cohered and single way for any Defence focussed startup/SME to not only engage and collaborate with one industry partner's requirements but an opportunity to engage and collaborate with many (FCAS) industry requirements, and MoD innovation requirements. As my own company has experienced it is a confusing, matrixed, time-consuming, frustrating and perplexing place to be as an SME looking to work within the Defence sector. Any partnership that seeks to take the noise out of the system and leverage existing good work & programmes to make them more accessible in a single, cohered way is one to be applauded I say. Kate R. At this year's #DSEI23, Andrew Webber (Whitespace Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer) was joined by John Ridge, Transformation Director at UK Civil Service and Kate R., BAE #FCAS Director of #Enterprise #Enablement for a #firesidechat to explore the collaboration between the Defence Innovation Directorate, UK Ministry of Defence innovation teams, Defence and #Aerospace #SME membership organisations and the FCAS industry partners. In an era of fast-evolving threats and #transformative #technological advancements, #collaboration between defence #organisations and #industry partners is paramount. Existing #supplychains need resilience to adapt and prepare for unexpected #events, respond quickly and effectively to #disruption and recover #stronger with an evolution of their #operations and #capabilities. The #conversation aimed to jointly evolve the approach on how SMEs are engaged whilst #accelerating their innovations. Kate, Andrew and John explored how to #augment existing company-specific supply chains with a common and shared approach for a #GCAP SME #ecosystem that both incubates earlier #TRL or new SME participants to be ready to engage in a future supply chain but also better enables the existing SMEs to collaborate more widely across the #consortium of industry partners as well as with each other. In the world of federal contracting, Phase III SBIR contracts help small businesses turn innovative ideas into real-world solutions. 🌎 Within the Department of Defense, a Phase III SBIR is especially important. It encourages small businesses to collaborate, mitigates technical risks, and drives solutions to some of the most complex challenges. 🛠 Monkton was honored to receive the MATTER SBIR Phase III #IDIQ contract on April 1, 2020 (not a joke!). MATTER lets us continue to develop secure, user-friendly mobile solutions for field-based operators and civil servants around the globe. It's all about making the government more modern and efficient, breaking down the traditional barriers to technology. 🚧 Phase III SBIR contracts align with the goals of Better Buying Power 3.0, which aims to make defense acquisition more effective and competitive. They're not just about funding—SBIRs foster a culture of innovation across government agencies and technology partners like Shift5. 💭 Curious about how #SBIR is reshaping government innovation? 🤔 Dive deeper below... #DoD #GovernmentTechnology #Modernization #DigitalSolutions
