I would implore anyone in lab automation to read the book “Breaking Through” by Katalin Kariko, especially the introduction. It talks a lot about what working at the bench feels like, and it addresses a false narrative that I often see in #labautomation. So often automation is justified by saying it’ll get researchers away from mindless lab work and back to thinking about problems. This misses a crucial point. Researchers working at the bench are taking in volumes of metadata about the experimental conditions - metadata that is often not captured in automated processes. When researchers say they don’t trust automation, part of that is this - that this crucial piece of information is lost, and with it, the ability to interpret results completely.

Today I am proud because last night I fully automated my anslysis so today is plug and play instead of hours of tedious work. The computer asks me questions, and my input directs the course of the analysis- resulting in a perfect plot for each set of files.
