Mathematical Sciences student Eliza Zawadka spent her summer researching inverse problems in medical imaging at University of Limerick "Most problems are known as forward problems where we have all the information about a problem and want to find a solution. For example, we fill in the optical properties of an object into an equation and use it to figure out how light travels through the object. We know the causes (optical properties) and we figure out the result (how the light travels). In inverse problems, we are given information about the solution and we want to find the causes - so for the example above we are given how the light travels through the object, but we want to know the optical properties inside the object that caused the light to behave in that way. Medicine is a constantly evolving field, and investigating new non-invasive imaging modalities is important. I focused on an imaging modality known as magneto-acoustic tomography with magnetic induction or ‘MAT-MI’, which combines a high contrast modality (such as diffuse optical tomography) with a high-resolution modality (like an ultrasound) to obtain clearer images." 🌐 Reflecting on an Incredible first time USA Visit: August 10-17, 2022 🇺🇸 I had an incredible opportunity to visit some renowned institutions in the USA, and I'm thrilled to share a glimpse of this enriching experience! 🔬 Marine Biological Laboratory, The University of Chicago, Woods Hole, Massachusetts 📅 Day 1 - August 11: Our journey kicked off with a meeting with Prof. Abhishek Kumar, who passionately delved into the research focus of his laboratory. The Line Scan Confocal Microscopy insights were eye-opening! During lunch, I had the privilege of discussing my research with Prof. Daniel Gerlich , gaining valuable feedback on my project. Later, Prof. Michael Shribak explained the fascinating world of OI-DIC microscope workflow and its applications. 📅 Day 2 - August 12: A detailed tutorial on sample preparation for Line Scan Confocal Microscopy set the stage. We then observed the microscope in action and delved into its operation intricacies. In the afternoon, we prepared embryos for OI-DIC Microscopy imaging, obtaining valuable data for various cell stages. 📅 Day 3 - August 15: Under Prof. Kumar's guidance, we prepared embryo samples for Anisotropy Fluorescence Imaging Microscopy. The learning process was both insightful and hands-on. 🎤 Additional Highlights: 1. Attended Flash Talks, where 2-minute research presentations showcased the diverse work at Marine Biological Laboratory. 2. Friday Evening Lecture by Prof. Dan Fletcher on "Pocket Doctors: Diagnosing Diseases with Mobile Phones" was a highlight! It was particularly exciting because of my interest in technologies and its application in science and medicine. 🤓 Apart from MBL visit, during my free time in Boston I got a chance to meet Dr. Stefan Issac, a Postdoc at that time at Prof. Stirling Churchman laboratory, Harvard Medical School, sharing the exciting research and future aspirations. 🤝 Finally, it was a pleasure seeing around Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and meeting inspiring women in tech Jessica H. and Aliya Tyshkanbayeva for the first time in real life! 🙌 Grateful for the chance to immerse myself in groundbreaking research, connect with brilliant minds, and meet online friends in person.
