Feeling anxious and overwhelmed? Just snapped at Susan from Accounting (again)? You’re not a monster. More likely, you’re experiencing work burnout. You’re not the only one: According to a 2023 Gallup poll, about 3 in 4 employees in America experience burnout some of the time. The good news is you can treat (and prevent) burnout naturally. As part of our root cause approach to medicine, our clinicians often use a test that measures cortisol levels throughout the day in members who are experiencing symptoms of burnout. This test helps to assess how the adrenal glands, which produce cortisol, are functioning. When I designed this post, I found it pretty eye-opening. Especially the brain fog and food!! Hard to set boundaries and prioritize rest and taking walks for those of us who are so passionate about what we do, and work for good causes. But if we wanna do it for the long haul I have to be good to ourselves too. #burnout #work #designforgood #healthtech #healthcare #design

You’re asking your people about Burnout, AMAZING!! But do you know what you’re asking? And do you know what to do if your people are experiencing Burnout? One CPO had told their people that Burnout is clinical depression - it’s not. One CEO had told their people Burnout doesn’t exist - it does. One client had been told by a consultant that Burnout was simply stress caused by high workloads - it’s not. Burnout has definitely become a buzzword over the last few years, but it’s not something we can downplay, ignore, or pretend it’s not happening. And, based on the conversations I’m having with people at the moment, I am absolutely convinced that 2024/25 will be where Burnout numbers soar. So PLEASE, continue to have these conversations, do the surveys, get the feedback, educate, prevent, and take action. And if you don’t know where to start, get in touch. #Burnout #BurnoutPrevention #WorkplaceWellbeing

✨Even if you're not burnt out (and I sincerely hope you're not), your voice matters. ✨ Contribute to research designed to identify powerful, preventative solutions to an issue that is affecting all of us, as we speak. Now more than ever, this research matters. Participation is simple and anonymous. Burnout is a complex and multifaceted issue. It’s not a bad day or week. It’s a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress. Because burnout happens to individuals, we tend to level the blame on individuals, too. This is wrong. Burnout is never the individual’s fault. And while individuals who are privileged like myself can take steps to prioritize our wellbeing, leaders can also take steps to change how we work – and how we think and talk about work – for the better. We are looking to create solutions that improve work for everyone. For people who are so deep in chronic stress they don’t even know they are burnt out. And others who simply have no option but to endure chronic workplace stress in order to survive, provide for their kids and keep a roof over their family’s head. The survey closes tomorrow – now's the time. https://lnkd.in/dfZ--6uA #burnout #burnoutprevention #chronicstress #humanleaders #infinitepotential

Burnout is increasingly common among BOTH employees and managers in the workplace. Employees who have these feelings are less likely to come to work performing at their best, less likely to take initiative and think creatively, and less likely to stick around. According to a study earlier this year by SHRM, 44% of surveyed employees, almost half - experienced feeling burned out at their current place of employment. As a leader, setting an example is crucial. By acknowledging and addressing your burnout, you can better support your team and promote a culture of balance. To identify specific drivers for your own feelings of "burning out," ask yourself these introspective questions: ➡️ What one or two things have been most exhausting or stressful for me? ➡️ What has been stopping me from getting adequate rest or taking regular breaks? ➡️ What energizes me that has been missing from my work or my life? ➡️ Where do I feel the most ineffective? ➡️ What is most frustrating to me or getting in my way? ➡️ What is taking significantly more energy than it should? ➡️ What is making me feel negative or cynical? ➡️ What did I previously enjoy about work that I no longer do? ➡️ When did this shift occur and what prompted it? By tackling burnout proactively, you can create an environment where you feel in control of your wellbeing - and you'll feel better for it. #Burnout #EmployeeWellbeing #Wellness #MentalHealth #Leadership

Burnout isn't just about being overworked—it's a state of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, according to the World Health Organization's 2019 definition. Coined by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in 1974, burnout predominantly affects those who are highly dedicated and committed to their work. Dr. Christina Maslach, the author of 'The Burnout Challenge: Managing People’s Relationships with Their Jobs', identifies three dimensions of burnout: exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. These symptoms are influenced by multiple factors, including workload, lack of control, insufficient rewards, and a breakdown of community. By understanding these elements, companies may be able to better manage or even prevent burnout, especially in helping professions like healthcare, social work, and education.
