The shrinking defense industrial base (DIB) presents a uniquely relevant and time-sensitive opportunity for the United States Department of Defense to implement tools to fast-track modernization efforts. Dr. Laura Taylor-Kale's acknowledgement of the power of commercial off the shelf (COTS) providers as a change agent for the DIB within DoD's first National Defense Industrial Strategy (NDIS) underlines the power and potential of defensetech to enable the U.S. in the Great Power Competition. https://lnkd.in/ge4Hvust #COTS #defensetech

🇺🇸 🚀🚁[excerpt] Since the 1990s, the defense sector has consolidated substantially, transitioning from 51 to 5 aerospace and defense prime contractors.' As a result, DoD is increasingly reliant on a small number of contractors for critical defense capabilities. Consolidations that reduce required capability and capacity and the depth of competition would have serious consequences for national security. Over approximately the last three decades, the number of suppliers in major weapons system categories has declined substantially: tactical missile suppliers have declined from 13 to 3, fixed-wing aircraft suppliers declined from 8 to 3, and satellite suppliers have halved from 8 to 4. Today, 90% of missiles come from 3 sources.? As a result, promoting competition and ensuring it is fair and open for future programs is a critical Department priority. https://lnkd.in/gVMtBe8v

Should we continue to fixed pricing contracts within the DOD for major weapons programs? It appears that many of these large programs are plagued with cost overruns and deliver date slippage. How can the industry and the DOD get back on track to delivering next generation platforms that deter our adversaries yet dont bankrupt the nation. Good read. My take is diversification across the DIB along with quicker contracting vehicles might help…but you decide! Follow the link below to view the article.
