🎊 We are very excited to introduce one of our YATSI members 🎊 Gina Ross is an analytical chemist👩🔬, the CTO of the start-up VenomAid Diagnostics and has two pet snakes🐍🐍. Here at YATSI she fills the role of the committee representative of YATSI Policy! Gina herself will take it from here: My name is Gina, I would describe myself as an energetic, empathetic, and creative person. I love animals and have 2 pet snakes and a cat. I have been fascinated by venomous animals (particularly snakes) since being a young child so I am very fortunate to be able to be able to work in a field where I can combine my expertise (diagnostic development) and passion (snakes) to hopefully make a positive impact on society. I enjoy being creative, whether this is by using CAD to design new devices that I then 3D print, or by making drawings/illustrations. I also love spending time outside and exploring nature. I am an analytical chemist specializing in the development of low-cost, user-friendly, and portable biosensors and diagnostic devices with smartphone-based readout with the overarching goal of taking science out of centralized laboratories and putting it into the hands of end-users who need it. My current role is as CTO of the start-up company VenomAid Diagnostics. Our goal is to develop tests that can rapidly detect specific venoms in patient samples to assist physicians in diagnosing snakebite so that an appropriate antivenom can be administered. Our flagship product will be a monoclonal antibody-based lateral flow assay capable of detecting venoms from Bothrops spp. in Brazil. In addition to leading the tech and R&D activities in the company, I am also supervising an industrial PhD student who is combining biotechnology and analytical chemistry to develop a novel biosensing platform. I will use my YATSI membership to network with other likeminded young scientific leaders across diverse disciplines to further strengthen my knowledge of research and innovation in different sectors. Being able to openly communicate with this network will allow me to contribute to forming solutions for important societal challenges at a national and international level. I would also use my membership to position myself as a role model for the next generation of young people in STEM. During my PhD and postdoc, I focused attention on promoting accessibility in STEM and involving the public with scientific research (citizen science) and plan to use my YATSI membership to continue with this. I believe it is important that individuals without a scientific background can still be involved with scientific research especially when conducting research that should benefit society. Ohio has become an important hub for the biotech industry, thanks to a mix of strong educational institutions, a strategic location, and a supportive business environment. In June 2023, CBRE released the U.S. Life Sciences Research Talent Report 2023 and two cities in Ohio came out as top emerging hubs for research: Columbus with $306 million in NIH (National Institute of Health) funding and Cincinnati with $262 million. The state is home to a wide variety of biotech companies and research organizations, and this article focuses on the biotechs to know in Ohio. Syngene International Limited, a leading global contract research, development, and manufacturing services organization, announced the purchase of a 17-acre land parcel in Genome Valley, Hyderabad as an extension to its existing research campus. Syngene’s CSR outreach in Telangana: As part of Syngene’s corporate social responsibility programs, in 2022, the Company funded the expansion of the mobile laboratory concept in schools by adding a ‘lab on a bike,’ exposing young people across government schools in Hyderabad to the world of science. The Company also funded 25 science-based scholarships for women from underserved communities, mentored by Syngene scientists based at the Hyderabad campus, providing first-hand exposure to careers in science. Over time, this program aims to increase the number of women studying STEM subjects and create a self sustaining network of women professionals in STEM. As I noted last week, Orion Corporation has a well-balanced gender split among its employees, with 57% being women. In STEM fields, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, the most innovative solutions emerge when diverse backgrounds and viewpoints are equally represented and brought together. We need to better visualise our work in LifeScience in West Sweden 🇸🇪 🧬💦 This important message was highlighted in a debate article in todays local news (link in comments field). Contemplating this, and acknowledging the sector's significance for Gothenburg and Sweden's economic growth, I firmly believe in the crucial importance of recognizing Life Science role models—be they teachers, scientists, or leaders. Furthermore,we should highlight, through compelling stories and concrete examples, how the collaborative atmosphere in Gothenburg's field is making a significant impact, and in some cases, daring to approach things differently. Exploring the driving forces behind my own decision to embrace Life Science (and Gothenburg), I realise it all came down to the impact of purpose and people, and how they make me feel. Leading stars, to guide my own journey in Life Science, was made by two wonderful ladies: ⭐️Mary, my Chemistry teacher who had a warm and strong PASSION for Science. She made Chemistry FUN , she gave us all confidence and made me ( probably us all) feel SPECIAL ⭐️Marianne, my dear aunt, a pharmacist who early on had influential roles within pharmaceutical companies and Läkemedelsverket. Her strong force to be capable to do anything steered me toward becoming a pharmacist as well. In the vibrant pharmaceutical industry era of the early 90s, my own pivotal moment arrived when I joined Hässle Läkemedel, Astra's marketing company, in Gothenburg. I had found my dream job alongside exceptional colleagues and a visionary boss (we still meet up every spring). Since then, I've taken immense pride in the talent and dedication of my Life Science peers. - Our contributions matter; they result in a substantial positive impact on the lives of patients. The Life Science industry is pivotal for Gothenburg due to its multifaceted contributions. It not only fosters scientific innovation but also generates employment opportunities, driving economic growth. Furthermore, collaborations between industry, academia, and the public sector, as exemplified by initiatives like the AstraZeneca BioVentureHub . The BVH , which I proudly has been part drivning the last 4 years, is a dynamic ecosystem, positioning Gothenburg as a hub for cutting-edge research and development. In essence, the Life Science industry in Gothenburg is instrumental in shaping a healthier, economically vibrant, and knowledge-driven community. Moreover, if I could offer guidance or inspiration to any aspiring individual considering a career in Life Science (much like my chemistry teacher and aunt did for me), the advice remains unchanged: - pursue your unique purpose and passions wholeheartedly. And …you will find a lot of these elements within the LifeScience sector, you just need to find YOUR path. .. .. ❤️ And Gothenburg, without a doubt, is a delightful place for Life Science enthusiasts like us to grow, innovate, and foster collaboration
