I can’t stop thinking about Yeti acquiring a cast iron cookware company for millions of dollars. It’s a good sign for the future of craft gear makers. Yeti recently made two acquisitions worth a combined total of $48 million. One of the companies, Mystery Ranch, is a backpack manufacturer based in Montana. They’re well known in the pack world for making high-quality packs for carrying heavy loads. The assumption is that they made up the majority of that $48 million. The Mystery Ranch part of the story is great and worth talking about, but I’m more interested in the cast iron cookware company they bought called Butter Pat. The founder of Butter Pat, Dennis Powell, is a man obsessed with his craft. He spent 3 years and over $100,000 figuring out how to make a cast iron skillet the way they did in the 1800s. Like a lot of manufacturing, cast iron foundries shifted to quantity and margin over quality and craftsmanship. He wanted to make them like they used to. Butter Pat launched their brand around a 12” cast iron skillet that cost $300+. Their cookware is made in the U.S. and the production process takes multiple weeks and up to 40 people to produce each item. Spend a few minutes reading through their website and you’ll quickly realize that this is a brand that is obsessed with craftsmanship. The Butter Pat story highlights the fact that you can build a very successful company by focusing on a sliver of a niche. You don’t even need the whole niche. This is the basic formula that both Butter Pat and Mystery Ranch used to create strong brands that eventually led to their significant acquisitions: * Obsess over high-quality * Control the manufacturing process * Don’t stray into new product categories * Price based on value delivered, not on market standards * Build a community of customers who do the marketing for you These acquisitions bring more legitimacy to craft gear makers and smaller brands that are relentlessly focused on delivering high-quality products to a narrowly defined market. There is a part of me that hates to see brands like this get sucked into the publicly trade behemoth that is Yeti. But I’m viewing it as a win for craft gear makers. In an industry that is filling up with public companies and private equity, the craft gear brands are the ones who are pushing product development and giving core users what they want. We need more of them.

💡 Why do companies decide to acquire other businesses? In December 2021, Livspace - home interior and renovation company - acquired a majority stake in Qanvast - Southeast Asia’s content destination and mobile platform for home improvement - which connects homeowners and trusted design professionals. The strategic investment created a common vision for both companies to transform the home interiors and renovations space while creating new opportunities for design and architecture professionals. In doing so, Livspace has now access to new markets and new customers. As you may know, customer acquisition can be costly, both in time and resources. Lensrentals To Acquire BorrowLenses https://ift.tt/4Af21jE Sometimes, in life, serendipity strikes and leaves us with strange coincidences. Today in the niche world of the camera community, On the same day that Nikon announced they bought RED, another merger is announced. Lensrentals is acquiring BorrowLenses. These companies are two of the leading services in online camera equipment, both making it easy to have your equipment shipped and returned with ease versus renting a camera or kit from a local camera house or sourcing locally from the community. Read below for our thoughts on this shocking merger. The Scoop on Lensrentals  Lensrentals is already incredibly dominant in this particular space. If you want to rent a camera, drone, lens, or kit, and have it shipped it you with a handy prepared return label and great customer service, LensRentals offered more than 6000 pieces of grip, camera, and lighting equipment to choose from. With this acquisition, which includes not just the brand and customers, that number will certainly go up. Will They Consolidate Warehouses?  Lensrentals is based in Memphis, and has long allowed in-person pickup and drop off. BorrowLenses was in San Carlos, CA; no word yet on if LensRentals will keep that location. There are potential benefits to a West Coast presence, both for in-person return and pickup, and also for cheaper last minute shipping costs. However, considering the price of California real estate, it could also make sense to put all the inventory in Memphis. That being said, perhaps the strategy is to expand the physical locations for more accessibility. Time will tell! Thoughts on Mergers  As well covered by Jon Oliver on his recent segment on the Boeing-McDonnel Douglass merger (which killed thousands), we don’t always love a corporate merger. But we're optimistic about this one. First off, the folks at Lensrentals have always been pretty solid, with a deep commitment to a level of nerdy lens and film gear knowledge that you only get to have when you think about nothing but lenses. Secondly, there's still plenty of competition in the space. You can still rent locally or use Sharegrid as much as you want. A Blast From The Past August 1, 2023 marks the 15th anniversary of the merger acquisition of Golden Greek Carpets. I’d like to share a few words in commemoration, beginning with a brief history. Golden Greek Carpet Care was established in 1975; it was started as an after hours, sideline carpet cleaning service. With an initial investment of $100, which covered one months rent for a used carpet steam cleaning machine, I was off to the races! By 1985, we evolved to include providing our steadily growing customer base with the products and installation of carpet, vinyl and tile. We incorporated in March 1986, under the name of Golden Greek Carpets, Inc. As is common with many startup businesses, we suffered through our fair share of challenges along the way; still we grew, and then thrived, under that name. It’s hard to believe that 15 years have already passed since the sale of Golden Greek Carpets. This date holds abundant meaning for me, as it allows me to reflect on how incredibly fortunate I was to work with so many extraordinary people, who ultimately became a part of our family. Although much time has passed, there’s hardly been a day that I haven’t felt a sense of gratitude for this experience. Through my career I learned many valuable lessons. One is that people at every level, who stand behind and support the company, carry the greatest influence in its success. As a leader, embracing what’s important to your team members helps clear the path towards greater achievement. I want to thank all of our former team members for their dedication in helping make Golden Greek Carpets the company that it became, and the commitment you made in upholding the integrity of our motto: “Quality Without Compromise”. Everyone was totally invested in Golden Greek’s success; we truly had the seeds of greatness! This chapter of my life is extraordinarily meaningful, and I could not have done it without each and every one of our friends, our customers, our employees, our coach, our consultant, the Houston Apartment Association, and of course, our installation contractors. I also had the good fortune of working with an exceptional class of distributor reps and mill reps. One of my earliest reps stands out particularly in my memory; one who showed a belief in us when it made a world of difference, during the very early stages of our growth. This was my first taste of feeling recognized as being a success within the flooring industry. It is important to me to communicate how much respect and gratitude I have for each and every one of you. Retrospectively, I realize that I appreciate our time spent together more now than I could have ever understood at the time. I sincerely hope that as of this moment in time, each and every one of you is thriving in whatever and wherever life has taken you. It would be nice to reconnect.
