The solar power industry, and specifically solar photovoltaics (PV), is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. In the EU alone, the European Commission’s #REPowerEU plan aims to install over 320 GW of solar photovoltaics by 2025 and 600 GW by 2030.
With increasing innovations in the industry that boost solar PV efficiencies and cost reductions, a more circular approach is needed to ensure products and materials get reused over time and we don't create enormous amounts of solar PV waste.
The Horizon 2020 Project CIRCUSOL (2018-2022) investigated just that: how to avoid solar PV waste and create more circular business solutions, by focusing on strategies such as reuse, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling.
We just published the results of the co-creation and circular business model innovation work we did for project CIRCUSOL, together with Lars Strupeit of The International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) - Lund University and Wim Van Opstal of VITO. You can read it here (open access):

We discuss the 5 demonstrators of the CIRCUSOL project and how we worked with them on circular business model innovations in a co-creative way:
(1) Waasland Co-housing (Belgium),
(2) REScoop.eu (Belgium),
(3) Cloverleaf (Belgium),
(4) Scaling-PSS (Switzerland), and
(5) SunCrafter GmbH (Germany).
Based on this, we describe the following typical steps for circular business model innovation:
1. Visioning: What does the circular project and business vision look like?
1. Ideation: What is the basic idea?
2. Design: What does the circular business model look like?
3. Experiment: Does the circular business model work?
4. Scale: How to replicate and scale the circular business model?
This approach is supported by a co-creative process and life cycle thinking.
See the figure below. In the paper, we highlight specific tools and methods such as life cycle assessment and customer journeys that can support the different steps in the circular business model innovation process.
Thank you to the case companies and all partners involved in the CIRCUSOL project for working together on circular solutions for the solar PV sector!
