It's been two weeks since moving to New York City, and my biggest concern is finding a job. Despite applying every day to various companies, most of them are ghosting me. I suspect it's because of my non-traditional education background in journalism and international relations. I wonder, what qualities are necessary to break through this educational barrier? Is it even possible, or is all this hype is just a result of survivorship bias? #jobsearch #careeradvice #entrylevel #STEMeducation #diversebackgrounds

Here's the biggest misconception universities made us believe what getting a job as an ARTIST was University gives you the illusion that a job is all about YOU. 1. Your fun 2. Your dreams 3. Your creativity/art Here's the reality of a job: 1. It's not about you, it's about what the company NEEDS 2. It's not about what you want, it's what the project NEEDS 3. It's not you art, nor your identity, nor your self-worth. It's a service! A service in exchange of a salary That's it! I wish I would have understood that back in 2018-2020 I would have served so much better. #job

On building an academic palace (or don’t get stuck with the clowns). Every so often a school will announce hiring a senior person & will claim its a game changer. The faculty will talk about how the place is on a high velocity trajectory. The prognosis will look good. Yet. A few years later, not much will have changed. Or worse, that high velocity trajectory will be in the wrong direction. Why? Because staffing an academic palace takes more than hiring a king. It takes building a team. It takes committing resources. It take embedding that senior person, team and resources in a broader culture of excellence. If you don’t have these elements, the department will quickly degrade into an academic circus - where people fight over status, students, and resources. I know because I’ve worked in both contexts - having fun working at a palace run by a team - and not having fun working at a circus run by clowns. So what to do? Look before you leap. Make sure the leadership, the people and the resources are needed to support excellence. Be you a student, an early career researcher, or a senior scholar, take some time to do your due diligence, make sure there is a commitment to building a team, resources to staff it, and a broader culture of excellence in the college or university. If there is, then join, and help build an academic palace - where you can realize your academic dreams. If there is not, then be wary, you don’t want to get stuck driving the clown car in an academic circus - where your academic dreams will be dashed. Don’t make the leap unless you like what you see! You don’t want to be the only serious scholar in a sea of clowns! Best of luck!

Weekly Wednesday Thoughts: 💭 When should we start talking about career to students? ✍️Some say junior year of high school. 🖋️Others say once they’ve entered college 🖊️Another, 8th grade My answer: ALWAYS ‼️ I’m pro-early intervention! The sooner we get careers in the minds of students, the more impact we will see and the more empowered they will feel about making a career decision. Why have we stopped career day in elementary schools? Why aren’t students taking music, art, or theater class anymore? How come we say, “you must go to college in order to get a career” when in fact there are other ways? Why do wait for junior year of high school to start having the conversation or only encourage seniors in college to go to their career services? We must start talking about career NOW with students and the way we do that will be for another post 👀 #career #studentdevelopment #earlyintervention #foodforthought
