Meet the Team - Fin Brelsford - Warehouse Manager This week we're talking to Verge's warehouse manager Fin Brelsford about his past experience, future plans for the warehouse and the companies environmental commitments. Fin joined the company in 2023 as a warehouse operative but his natural resourcefulness and drive shined through allowing him to quickly be promoted to the role of warehouse manager. Outside of work Fin is an avid runner spending most of his nights after work attempting to set a new personal best on the track. "How has your previous experience allowed you to excel as a warehouse manager?" From being a part of a team to leading one, many past experiences have gone into helping shape the manager I am today. One of the key elements, I have come to realise, is that of creating a strong team bond to help the workplace thrive. Working to deadlines, punctuality and effort are all integral yet without having a place where everyone wants to work and succeed none of these will be reached with maximum potential, which is what we strive for at Verge. "What systems would you like to implement in the future to make things in the warehouse more efficient?" I envision a system that allows all stock being electronically accounted for with quantities and set locations within the warehouse as an ideal way to start creating a more efficient workplace. Implementing this would make the entire process that much more seamless for everyone involved as the margin for error would be greatly reduced. This is not to say there are any major flaws with our current system, however, a more flexible set-up would be beneficial for future growth. "Are there specific practices you've implemented to reduce the environmental impact of warehouse activities?" Here at Verge we stand by the motto ‘Waste not, want not’ - we have always been believers in helping where we can whether that be big or little gestures. Our proactive approach is seen through pallet donations, consistent level of recycling and cutting down on wasted consumable goods to just name a few. The worlds going green and we’re onboard to get there with it. #b2b #management #technology #future

Some of the hardest years were when I was working in retail. Why? Because of how I was treated by customers. When you're working in retail or any service job the customer is always right, even when it comes to the expense of them treating you as subhuman. It wasn't uncommon to come to a shift and have someone verbally abuse me or one of my coworkers. Our responses? Smile and apologize for any inconvenience we made for them. 🙄 After such incidents, I would always think, "How would it feel if someone came into your workspace and started yelling at you? Or opened and threw multiple large bags of M&M's in your area which then YOU had to clean up? (yes that actually happened.)" I knew the reason why people did that was because they had a chance to have a little bit of power over someone and I unfortunately had to be the culprit. But, that didn't make the situation any better. Yes, we all have bad days and moments we aren't proud of, but please don't take it out on someone literally just doing their job. Be kind, always. (To be extra kind to a retail worker, bring out the clothes you don't want instead of leaving them in the fitting room stall 😇) #retail #serviceworkers #serviceindustry

I used to have jobs that had a very clear beginning, middle and end. Janitor (as a kid) - sweep, mop, empty trash. Do it all over again the next day. Lawn "Business" (as a kid) - mow, rake, bag it up. Do it all over again the next day. Retail - open the store, count down the tills, stock the shelves, sell as much as possible. Do it all over again the next day. There are plenty of jobs that are available in the world that are like this. Plenty. Personally, I haven't had one of those kinds in over 30 years. What about you? Do you prefer the jobs that have a clear cut beginning, middle and end or would you prefer the ones that have a beginning and a who ton of middle (with no end visibly in site)? #LookingToLearn

Convenience stores are the heartbeat of neighborhoods, offering quick access to daily essentials. Because these stores are often the central hubs of a community, maintaining a clean and welcoming environment is a constant challenge. High foot traffic, spills, and the need for swift, efficient cleaning are constant concerns. Additionally, convenience store operators and staff often have limited time for cleaning amidst their busy schedules. So, how do you fight against these persistent obstacles? We cover this in our latest blog. Read on below👇 #ConvenienceStores #CleaningChallenges #AutomatedCleaning

So I work in an Albert Heijn. You would think it’s nothing fancy. You are right. It is nothing fancy. It’s a part-time job in a chain supermarket. Of all the positions I work as a kwalitaitmedewerker. A quality employee; glorified corporate title for a cleaner. This is not something remotely glamorous that you want to post on LinkedIn and boast about what you’ve learned, and that team you “enjoyed working with” once as an intern. No. It’s a tedious job that remains unoccupied even when jobs are scarce; even when it requires virtually no experience, nor much intelligence. I deal with trash, detergents and heavy cargos because I choose to. I don’t complain about my job, because that is what I choose to do. I wanted to make myself useful, one step at a time. But even the most banal position, like this one, comes with its own view. I have seen people putting back our cheapest carton of milk after asking me for the price. I have seen clients opening boxes after boxes of eggs, putting only the biggest in one to take home. I have seen homeless guys depositing bottles from the street the whole evening, just to buy lottery tickets with statiegeld. When the machines don’t accept flat bottles, they blow and pump them with their mouth, regardless where the bottle came from. I have had shivering men asking me where to find baking soda. Shy couples approached me to ask for Clear-blues. I have seen men asking me which flavour of chips fits their kid, still in a cradle. With my asian face I have been assumed many nationalities, greeted like a circus animal with the lines they learned from anime or k-pop. Customers have blessed me with many Gods. I have been preached with Jesus as I helped them find their products. I have seen so much; yet for everything I’ve seen only reminds me what I have not. “The society” was once a blur to me. I do not know its faces. I barely know what it does to people. Working in a supermarket, I’m obliged to see. My eyes and ears are forced wide open to witness anyone that comes. And anyone can. Office jobs don’t offer such a view. For the white-collared, the society is no more than an invisible metaphor until it causes nuisance, or until it makes the news. University students study and so desperately strive to become one. College education elevates them from where they came from; whether for better or worse. Money, influence, power, joy. But eventually you eat, drink, clean. You stop and do groceries. Don’t ignore them. Don’t ignore the human.
