🌐 Embracing MODELING & SIMULATION (MODSIM) for #Sustainable #Innovation 🌱 Modeling and simulation are unified within an experience called MODSIM. It enables the companies we serve daily all across the world to conduct computational testing with physics-based simulation as an important part of their innovation process. The immediate result is less real-world testing and prototyping while lowering cost and reducing risks. It implies that little or no redesign is needed, physical certification testing is successful, and high quality products can get to market faster. The objective is clear: being first time-right when leaving the virtual world for physical testing. 🔄🌿 MODSIM enables to design, test, and refine strategies for sustainability: resource management, energy efficiency, waste reduction. The ability to simulate and model different scenarios thus empowers organizations to identify the most environmentally friendly and economically viable solutions. As an example, the German based start up Hybrid-Airplane Technologies GmbH, a spin-off of the University of Stuttgart, focused on developing innovative forms of #UAV offering a new sustainable flight concept called h-aero LTA (for Lighter Than Air) system. This aircraft has the specificity to be powered by wind and solar energy, and was designed for Earth observation, research and communication applications. They leveraged Dassault Systèmes #3DEXPERIENCE Platform MODSIM capabilities throughout its product development cycle which allowed them to create a lightweight aircraft that delivers speed, endurance and agility by making the most of balloon, helicopter and airplane flight concepts. Time appears to pass faster towards the end of the year, doesn’t it? We were able to document his effect for the first time on video during the end-of-the-year party of the DLR Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics! So what happened during 2023? In the video, Fabian Reimer is explaining design thinking and VR based design of UAM cabins. Some of our cabin concepts for airliners have been adopted by our colleagues at the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada into their physical testing environment. Combined virtual and physical investigations have also been conducted on the integration and operation of liquid hydrogen systems in the A320 #HydrogenAviationLab on Hamburg Airport under coordination of Lufthansa Technik. The link to industrialization in the Airbus #FutureIndustrialLine has been established using MBSE which was also a main topic in the growing cabin track in annual congress of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt - Lilienthal-Oberth e.V. (DGLR). We completed our #HorizonEurope flagship project AGILE4.0 on digital design methods successfully and acquired the Clean Aviation project #ODE4HERA, in which we implement the technologies for the digital design of Hybrid Electric Regional Aircraft coping with requirements of our industrial partners like Leonardo and Siemens. #systemsofsystems and #firefighting are in the focus of the #COLOSSUS project which brought our old friends from Saab and Linköping University back to the consortium and integrated our new friends from INCAS - National Institute for Aerospace Research "Elie Carafoli". With Airbus Defence and Space we completed the pre-design of the Future Fighter Demonstrator. A main effort was identifying the most promising technology options towards climate neutral and economically feasible aviation in the DLR project #EXCACT together with 20 institutes. #EXACT was completed successfully delivering a major milestone of DLR in the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft / Helmholtz Association program aeronautics. We demonstrated the #HyBird concept of a climate-neutral General Aviation aircraft in a Scaled Flight Test together with Airbus and DLR Technologies for Small Aircraft at our Erprobungszentrum für unbemannte Luftfahrtsysteme in #Cochstedt. Assessing the impact of technologies in aviation is the objective of our projects #ALICIA, IMPACT MONITOR Project and #CLAIM. The methodology was used by the "Arbeitskreis Klimaneutrale Luftfahrt" (#AkkL) by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and it was presented during the #NLK2023 in #Hamburg. For the validation and verification with the other national aeronautical research centers, a new working group has been founded within the International Forum for Aviation Research. #ces2024 is nearly incomprehensible in the scope of innovations on display with advanced mobility now encompassing the entire West Hall. Within this setting, the #Supernal exhibit stood out visibly and subtly. Certainly, a vertiport erected in the middle of the Diamond Lot garners attention. But the broader messaging went beyond showcasing new #SA-2 vehicle. The exhibit demonstrated a working model of an entire #UAM system: vertiport, vehicle, and ecosystem. As the UAM industry begins to grapple with engaging increasingly broader segments of society on a global scale, the demonstration takes industry a step forward in making the evolution of UAM tangible and comprehendible within the context of larger mobility vision. To me, it was exciting to apply our work across departments and across industry partners related to vertiport network siting, vertiport demand and vehicle estimates, UAM corridor design, and ecosystem. On the Control Room experience, I enjoyed working with co-collaborators and industry partners as we solved the simulated challenges of UAM network development mixed with the demands of making the content show-ready: #FAATechCenter, #Cobec, #OneSky, #Echodyne, #Truweather, #Viasat, #Anra. The show resulted in a launching pad to accelerate these efforts in 2024. There’s so much more to unpack, but I’ll save those thoughts for future posts. Exciting times ahead!
