Only 6 in 10 students complete a bachelor’s degree within six years. Getting students to college is not enough; we must also help them get through.
I remember freshman year sitting in my philosophy course which was in a huge auditorium filled with about 100 of us bright-eyed and hopeful students. We were told by the professor to "look to your left and look to your right, one of you will not graduate". Hearing that was awful (not motivating as maybe they intend for it to be), and it is why the work that we/CCA and higher ed professionals do is so meaningful and necessary.
College completion isn't just about better employment prospects, higher earnings, and reduced risk of poverty. It's also about the valuable lessons learned along the way: effort, perseverance, grit, self-advocacy, social and interpersonal skills, following processes, teamwork, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and more. These are the skills that prepare us for success beyond the classroom. We have to emphasize the collective benefits associated with the college experience because the value of the college experience is truly immeasurable.
The work we're doing at CCA focuses on promoting college completion and eliminating institutional performance gaps that hinder student success. The goal is 10 out of 10 students completing and in a timely fashion.
We can reach this goal... together.🏆
