San Francisco Community Land Trust (SFCL) received $20 million from philanthropist Mackenize Scott to support their vision of building housing and homeownership opportunities for BIPOC communities previously excluded from access to wealth. The organization’s mission is to create permanently affordable housing for low-to-moderate-income individuals and families through community ownership of the land. As the housing crisis persists, there remains an urgent need to secure affordable, stable housing for those who have been historically marginalized. Tonight is a big night for the Dubbo Community. Last year I was approached by a local businessman, Steven Wilson (pictured). Steve came to me with an idea. He wanted to do something that contributed positively, and supported vulnerable people in our community to access opportunities. He developed this concept across 110 acres of land he owns and wanted to invite the community to use the land. Fast-forward to tonight and we're holding our first public meeting to formally invite the community to share their needs and ideas. As anyone in the community development and grants space know, when there's a huge need in the community that's 'hidden' because organisations aren't able to advocate or co-ordinate themselves for advocacy they often just put up with the status quo. The flow-on effect is that they're restricting services to the community, other services go out of town, people travel out of town for recreation purposes that should be available and it reduces a communities liveability. Then we have social issues, which in part, are symptoms of this (lack of services, opportunities etc.). Our team is honoured to lead this project. What I read here is collaboration of local nonprofits, cheaper and less regulated housing, and a housing first approach. How can Seattle learn from Houston? "So what is Houston’s secret? There were arguably three elements. First, the city had strong political leaders who herded nonprofits so that they worked in unison rather than competing. Second, Houston’s lack of regulation makes it easy, quick and cheap to build new apartments: Building a small one-bedroom can cost less than $200,000, while Los Angeles spent as much as $837,000 per apartment for people who were homeless. Third, Houston focused less on general help, such as handing out jackets or providing counseling, and more on moving people into apartments and providing ongoing care to keep them housed."

#HousingOpportunityFund Rally Recap: Last Week, BiSHoP rallied with SF Community Organizers in support of subsidies that address the hardships of extremely low-income (ELI) seniors, working families, and disabled individuals. The fund would provide rental subsidies to bridge the gap between very low-income and ELI rent levels. For less than 1% of San Francisco's budget, this subsidy would make 700+ units affordable to ELI households by 2026, and 2,800+ households by 2031. The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), is a vital resource for local governments in their efforts to address urban poverty and community development issues. Understanding CDBG is crucial for effectively leveraging these funds to make a tangible impact in your community. Did You Know? - Income limits for CDBG are based on the Area Median Income (AMI) and household or family size. The limits are updated every year. - CDBG was created by Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, making 2024 the program's 50th anniversary!             - CDBG can be used to fund many projects in a community, but only 15% can only be used for public services like youth programs, services for senior citizens, and childcare. Nonprofits are vital for Toronto’s communities, but they are being squeezed out of their own neighbourhoods by rising rents and lack of space. They need more affordable and long-term access to public spaces in their own neighbourhoods, where they are most needed and effective. But the City’s real estate and development practices are not helping them. They are often excluding or displacing them from community-use space. We need the City to implement three recommendations that will help address the space crisis. The second recommendation is to ensure that all municipal real estate and (re)development practices intentionally seek to expand nonprofit community organizations and grassroots groups access to secure and affordable community-use spaces. This includes better community consultation processes and higher standards for assessing community services needs (space, programming) in the area around any development.
