Happy Day after Christmas, also known as Boxing Day in many Commonwealth nations. Interestingly, although Boxing Day is now associated with post-Christmas sales, it actually originated as a holiday to give gifts, donations and charity to people in need. It was a day to recognize the hard work and hard lives of the less fortunate and to share with them in goodwill. Some say that wealthy business owners would give their employees Christmas leftovers and other presents and the gifts were usually wrapped up in a box, hence where the holiday's name originated. Another theory is that the term Boxing Day also refers to church alms boxes, the containers used to collect donations from church visitors. Supposedly, these were opened on December 26, and the collected money was then distributed to the underprivileged. Moreover, a collective initiative across Tasmanian clubs culminated in a generous $35,220 donation to the Ronald McDonald House Charity, significantly enhancing the support facilities for families of children undergoing medical treatments in Hobart.
