My First 2 Months as a Projects Engineer In my journey as a project engineer over the past two months, the learning curve has been steep, and the experiences invaluable. Here are some key takeaways that have shaped my understanding of the role: 1. People Management Skills One of the foremost lessons has been the importance of people management. I've discovered that leading a team involves more than just giving orders—it requires a delicate balance of respect, understanding individual needs, and addressing concerns. By taking care of my team, I've witnessed a reciprocal commitment to the success of our project. 2. Project Coordination and Monitoring Scheduling, monitoring, and coordinating various facets of a project have become second nature. Efficient project management involves meticulous planning, regular checks, and adaptability to keep everything on track. 3. Young Engineer : I have 3 years of experience and currently working as a construction scheduler. I want to be a Project Manager in the future. My goal is to manage large projects of construction domain. I am thinking of pursuing MBA in Construction Management. I think It will help me getting project management roles at higher level. What is your opinion and advise? Me : Are the Project Managers in your current organisation have Masters in Construction Management? Young Engineer : In my company, 90% project managers are not even a regular MBA. They are due to experience and promotions. I also got a promotion from engineer 1 to engineer 2 recently. Me : Usually the industries do not hire project managers without sufficient experience, and often in the same domain. After you complete MBA and with your 3 years’ experience, you might be hired in Project Coordination roles. Young Engineer : Yes I know I cannot get directly project manager’s role even after MBA but at least I can try for Assistant PM role. Me : I saw in your CV that you are currently managing 15 engineers. Is it correct? Young Engineer : Yes. I even gave training to a batch of nearly 30 fresh engineers recently for the current project. Me : If you are actually doing what is mentioned in your Resume then you are already performing the roles of Assistant Project Manager. Apply yourself fully and continue doing the hard work for few years. They will make you Project Manager for sure. Managing and coaching people is a great trait for a PM, seems like you have it. Just give some time and you will reach there. So if the salary and other things are ok, then stick to the current job. Young Engineer : That sounds great and enthusiastic. I got your point. Someone, even a recruiter, asked me to send my PMP certificate and my CV for a Planner role that I'm trying to stop applying for. I informed her that I would only send my CV and that my credentials would be presented during the interviews. As previously stated, I forwarded my CV as I had told her earlier. However, she persisted and insisted that I also forward my certificate. Using my hard-earned certificate to tender for a job when there's no guarantee of employment is a challenge I face. It's frustrating to invest so much in my development without receiving any job offers. I had previously communicated to her that I would only provide the certificate when the client specifically requested it. Despite this, she still sent an email requesting my certificate. This situation highlights the disrespectful behavior of some unscrupulous recruiters. Some organizations won't even cover the cost of basic BOSIET training, and yet they're eager to use my CV for their bidding processes after I've invested significantly in my own development. It's disheartening that some assume I'm unaware that sending my certificates via email might be interpreted as granting permission for their use in bidding. Project management roles and responsibilities in small companies versus large companies When it comes to project management in larger companies, it's essential to understand that the role can vary significantly depending on the organisation's size. For instance, in a company like CPB or McConnel Dowell or Ausenco etc the project manager's role typically encompasses the management of the engineering manager, procurement manager, contracts, project controls, and document control managers. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that they meet the schedule, budget and report project status accurately. In larger projects, which can range from $500 million to Billion dollar projects in project value, there might be one major project manager & one construction manager overseeing the project or multiple Additionally, there will be project engineers involved; these roles are essentially the roles leading into project management so they are training to become a project managers eventually. So it matters how you are performing and perceived by others in all aspects of the project which determines your career progression. In contrast, smaller companies with five to ten employees managing projects worth one to two million dollars operate differently. While the work remains interesting, the scope is more focused, and there's less need for all aspects of the larger corporations, less red tape, but good work all the same. Smaller projects often provide more hands-on experience, or intimate experience with opportunities to work on various aspects of projects comparative to really large budgeted projects. So when transitioning from a small to a large company, it's crucial to understand that job titles may not directly translate. A project manager role in a small company might entail different responsibilities compared to a similar role in a larger organization. Therefore, applicants must contextualize their experience appropriately to avoid misunderstandings during the application process. What is engineering project management? Engineering is a very difficult and complex profession, characterized by its constant change and development, and this means that every engineer who wants to succeed in the field of his profession, must keep pace with every development related to it. Management of engineering projects requires careful planning, clarification of related plans to the engineers in the team, going through the stage of defining the objectives of this project, and requires the development of contingency plans. The importance of applying such a type of study is to reduce the occurrence of the opposite of what is expected, which affects the success of projects. What is worth mentioning is that engineering management is different from project management, so that the role of the engineering project manager includes one of the administrative aspects, which is the supervision of the technical side. On the other hand, the project manager works to manage and lead the project comprehensively, that is, the manager is the project manager and not the engineer, the engineer is a member of the team, he provides engineering work in his specialization.
