“In addition to grants, Ukrainian startups will gain THE BEST European experience and receive mentoring from top international partners”. 🧑🏫 On October 26, the first facilitation session for stakeholders in the Ukrainian hardware industry was held in Kyiv by USAID Competitive Economy Program in Ukraine (USAID CEP) in partnership with the YEP startup incubator. During the session, the following topics were discussed: ☑ Talents: Problems and solutions for training personnel that can ensure industry growth. ☑ Creation of products: Necessary prerequisites and obstacles in creating technologically successful products. ☑ Companies: Problems and opportunities for scaling, internationalization, and development. ☑ State policy and industry: Support from the state and the removal of obstacles. More than 30 representatives from the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Ukrainian Startup Fund, polytechnic universities, non-formal education providers, representatives of the maker movement, regional clusters, and national associations, as well as companies, startups, venture capital funds, and technology industry experts, actively participated in the event. This demonstrated their openness to cooperation and coordination in developing strategies to solve problems and discover potential pathways for the growth of the hardware industry. "We are interested in the more active development of engineering companies and hardware factories in Ukraine, which have significant potential for import substitution, increasing the export of highly competitive products, and creating jobs in Ukraine. For this reason, we initially brought together key stakeholders in this field, including representatives of the government, regional production clusters, accelerators, investors, businesses, and experts, to discuss obstacles to the development of hardware companies and ways to stimulate Ukrainian engineering products. We also aim to increase the number of specialists in the industry. We plan to make the hardware sector meetings regular and progress to specific initiatives with companies, regions, and the state," says Valeriy Dobrovolskiy, Future Industries Team Lead (IT, engineering, creative industries) at USAID CEP. 🖥👀 Watch the video to see how the session went and hear the participants' impressions!

Can technology be our ally in the fight for democracy? Imagine a digital tool that can counter Russian fake news amid the full-scale invasion of Ukraine – just one result from last year's hackathon series in Tbilisi, Georgia. We're very excited to support the relaunch of this ambitious project, a collaborative effort by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation (Denmark), alongside ForSet • ფორსეტი (Georgia), and Yep!Moldova (Moldova). The project itself features hackathon events in Georgia and Moldova, but also Entrepreneur Fellowships in Copenhagen, Denmark, all supported through our New Cooperation Mechanism. We contacted Richard Walakira, Program Manager at the Alliance of Democracies Foundation to understand why this project is important right now: "Our Democracy Tech Hackathons and ongoing Democracy Tech Fellowship are aimed at fostering tech solutions for freedom and democracy, as well as strengthening the Democracy Tech ecosystem in Georgia and Moldova. The support from NDF allows us to leverage these events to identify and recruit the most promising tech talent dedicated to the defence of democracy and freedom in the region."
