Comfort zones & why backtracking is not an option. POV: You are on an 11-hour long flight. I don't know about you but I can't sit still in one place for 11 hours. (Even on a first-class flight). You feel uncomfortable. But you still sit there for 11 hours. Why? Because you want to get to your destination. You commit to the temporary discomfort. Because you can see that resort as clear as a day. You know you will get there. This is the reality of your business goals too. Being outside of your comfort zone will get you to your destination - if you can commit to the process long enough. What are your COMFORT go-tos? For me, when I can feel like I'm crashing...I get into my pjs, comfy socks and burrow in my soft throw, with a book - or go to sleep. That's it. And that resets my mind, my body and my heart rate. Confession: I have had to do this a lot in the last week or so, because I did too much and burnt the candle too much and now, this week, I'm still in a bit of recovery mode. Now - "too much" is subjective, I realise. We are all living in completely different boats, on the same (some times choppy) sea. Some boats are bigger, sturdier and painted beautifully with a suitable name like: Princess Moana (or something), or Big Rock. (I imagine that would the name of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's boat). Other boats are more like the late Steve Jobs' Yacht (only mentioning it because I actually got to SEE this one moored in San Diego many moons ago). And then there are the many many boats that vary between tiny row boats, rubber dinghies or....on some days...I'll be honest, I feel like I'm on a plastic inflatable flamingo lilo...floating precariously in open seas. (Picture: Shark fins circling me, with wide eyes, clinging tightly with both hands...screaming internally like you do when you scream in a nightmare...quiet and strangled.) I think I've been swinging between the flamingo lilo and the rubber dingy level, but I'm hoping to upgrade to the rowing boat by the time I hit Friday. The plane parts started talking! After hosting a full-day event in Toronto, I was eager to catch my flight back to Chicago. Exhausted from staring at screens, I decided to take a break and watch the planes outside. These planes were parked right in front of the lounge. The first thing that caught my eye was the massive engines. They were so big as if they were proudly declaring, 'We're the stars here.' But then there were vast and impressive wings teasing the engines. As if saying, 'Sure, you're strong, but without us, you'd just be a fancy paperweight.' And then there was the cabin, which could easily be seen as a burden, made a point. It said, 'I'm not just baggage; I'm the reason those wings and engines have a job.' Don't we often find ourselves in different roles like these plane parts? Sometimes, we're like those engines, feeling essential and powerful. Other times, we're more like the wings, quietly supporting and keeping things on track. And then there are moments when we might feel like the cabin, overlooked and underestimated. But we must realize our significance and how we contribute and snap back. In families, at work, and in life, we play all three roles, and every role matters. We can be the driving force, the support system, or the unsung hero. As I boarded my flight, I carried this little nugget of wisdom. No matter which role we find ourselves in, we're all part of the journey." Which plane part have you been lately?
