“We must continue to stand for equality and justice. In the face of eroded voting rights nationwide and after the striking down of affirmative action in college admissions and women’s reproductive health and abortion rights by the Supreme Court, I—indeed we—must continue to stand… We can and must do better…for you see—our very future as a people and a democracy hinge on it… The soul of our state and our nation hangs in the balance and challenges us to use our political muscle, indeed our civic and social capital, NOW, to move the needle on equality and justice.” Teree Caldwell-Johnson It is with a heavy heart that we share that our PPNCS Board Vice Chair Teree Caldwell-Johnson died Sunday morning, March 31, 2024, after a battle with cancer. An unrelenting champion for underappreciated communities, Teree was beloved in Des Moines, Iowa and across our region. She lived an extraordinary life of service and was known for her courageous voice as she was often described as speaking truth to power. Her leadership was powerful and intersectional. Teree Caldwell-Johnson was a force of nature and may her memory be a blessing.

Reflecting on the Anniversary of Roe V. Wade As today marks another anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade decision, it's impossible to overlook the seismic shift that occurred with the Supreme Court's ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. The overturning of a nearly 50-year precedent protecting a woman's right to choose is more than a step backward; it's a travesty that has catapulted reproductive rights to the forefront of our national debate. The post-Roe landscape is fragmented, with states enacting a patchwork of laws that either fiercely guard or severely restrict abortion rights. This legal inconsistency creates a tumultuous environment where women's access to healthcare is heavily dependent on geography, exacerbating issues of inequality and healthcare access. However, the resurgence in activism and advocacy for reproductive rights with organizations and individuals alike rallying to safeguard these fundamental freedoms, is heartening. It illustrates that the fight for abortion rights is far from over—it's entering a new chapter. We all have a stake in the protection of human rights-- of reproductive rights. How can we, as a collective society, push forward to reinstate and protect abortion rights? We must use our voices. Engage in civil discourse. Act within our local communities. And most importantly, we can't let this issue fade into silence. Change starts with a conversation. Let's get talking. THE FIGHT FOR BODILY AUTONOMY !! IT’S A FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, OUR BODIES, OUR FAMILIES, AND OUR FUTURES!! REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS! ABORTION IS AN ETHICAL, MORAL, & SPIRITUAL ISSUE THAT IS ALSO A HEALTHCARE ISSUE! REPUBLICANS PREDICT A DYSTOPIAN FUTURE UNDER PRESIDENT BIDEN BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO VIABLE POLICY CONCERNING ABORTION AND AN AGENDA THAT SUPPORTS A CONTINUING PURVEYANCE OF MENDACITY, DYSTOPIA, MISOGYNY, EXTREMISM, FEAR, FRAUD, FASCISM, VIOLENCE, HATRED, BIGOTRY, AND XENOPHOBIA. THEY REPRESENT A METASTASIZING NEOFASCIST AUTOCRATIC THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!! IN ESSENCE ‘A CULT’!! TRUMP IS A VIRUS AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS HIS HOST! THE SCOTUS’S RIGHT WING FEDERALIST AGENDA OF STATES RIGHTS HAS MADE A MOCKERY OF THE ABORTION ISSUE, FURTHERING AN UNTENABLE ANTI-AUTONOMY STANCE, IN DIRECT OPPOSITION TO ETHICAL PRINCIPLES; PUTTING WHAT SHOULD BE A WOMAN’S HEALTHCARE DECISION INTO THE HANDS OF POLITICIANS. IT WILL NOT STAND!!!

Ohio voters cast their votes and, once again, validated what many Americans believe – women should have the right to access abortion care. For the Black women who continue to have higher maternal mortality rates and who often face increased barriers to healthcare, this codification of reproductive rights in Ohio moves us closer to the access and treatment we need. Now, we must replicate these outcomes across the country to ensure all women have the right to reproductive healthcare.
🗳️ This week, Ohio voters achieved a momentous feat by amending their state's constitution to guarantee the right to access abortion care. This significant development, coming nearly 17 months after the Supreme Court's decision on Roe v. Wade, stands as a landmark victory for advocates of reproductive rights. The impact of this achievement is profound, especially for Black women who have historically encountered multifaceted barriers when seeking abortion care. This constitutional amendment represents a substantial stride toward promoting equality and equity, directly addressing the disparities in healthcare access that have disproportionately affected reproductive healthcare. Ohio's bold decision seeks to level the playing field, ensuring that women, regardless of their backgrounds, have equal access to a comprehensive range of reproductive healthcare options.

Reproductive Justice and Public Health Executive⠀| Author of "Black Women’s Reproductive Health and Sexuality: A Holistic Public Health Approach™"
I am a scholar activist, so I always love leading with facts because...facts don't lie. For Black women, girls and gender-expansive people, barriers to accessing abortion care have grown even more daunting since the overturn of Roe v. Wade. The past two years since the Dobbs decision have exposed the fact that Roe was never and has never been enough to secure full reproductive autonomy for our communities. The majority of Black women of reproductive age in the United States now live in states that have both banned or are likely to ban abortion, and we are some of the hardest hit by policies that seek to control our reproductive futures. Over the past two years we have seen Black women targeted by law enforcement for pregnancy loss, persistent racial disparities in maternal health outcomes for Black mothers, and skyrocketing costs of accessing abortion care due to state abortion bans. Our recent poll revealed that approximately 40% of Black women of reproductive age feel less safe and are less sure about whether to have children because of abortion bans. Everyone should be able make their own decisions about pregnancy and health care without the fear of government interference. #DobbsAnniversary

Fifty one years ago today, the Supreme Court issued its landmark 7–2 decision in Roe v. Wade. Eighteen months ago it was overturned. At Ellevate, it’s rare for us to talk directly about political issues, but when we do, it’s because we see the lines between the personal and political impacting freedom of choice. Impacting equality. Impacting our human rights. We believe that every person deserves the freedom to make decisions about their own life without living in fear. In this collective struggle, we acknowledge the intersectionality of this issue and that abortion bans reinforce systemic racism and economic injustice. As women, we have demonstrated incredible strength and resilience, prevailing through numerous challenges. And once again, we will continue to forge a path towards equality and justice. We call upon individuals, communities, and policymakers to join us in the fight for reproductive rights and equal access to healthcare. -Register to vote and check your registration status at Vote.org -Sign a petition, you can find an updated list with Amnesty International -Donate and support organizations. This is a devastating decision. Support these groups working for reproductive justice in Georgia—they're not giving up, and neither should you. SisterSong challenged Georgia’s ban in today's decision and continues to fight. Their mission is to amplify and strengthen the collective voices of Indigenous women and women of color to ensure reproductive justice through securing human rights. Access Reproductive Care-Southeast provides funding and support to ensure Southerners receive safe and compassionate reproductive care, including abortion services. The Lawyering Project leverages legislation to improve abortion access and uphold the rights and dignity of people seeking and providing reproductive health care. SPARK Reproductive Justice NOW engages in power building through grassroots organizing, advocacy, and knowledge-building in Georgia and across the U.S. South, centering Black queer women, trans folks, and folks living outside the gender binary. Women Engaged works to support Black women and young adults to become impactful leaders, key decision-makers and effective agents for social change through voter engagement and reproductive justice advocacy and leadership development. Thanks to the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice for publishing my thoughts, two years after Dobbs, on what more we need from state courts to protect the rights, autonomy, and lives of pregnant people. The Texas Supreme Court didn't get it right by a long shot, but others can do better #reproright #statecourts
