Gelato in Rome Post 2 of 5 by Madison Mills The origin of gelato Gelato plays a massive role in Roman food history. As early as 3000BC there are accounts of Egyptians and Roman emperors enjoying crushed ice with fruit juice flavouring. (Mincho, 2023). This soon evolved to the creamy sweet dessert we know gelato as today. In 1884 the famous Gelateria Pepino opened in the Italian region of Piedmont. The store is still open today, being one of the first to sell the evolved gelato still seen in the modern century. (Julia, 2014) Due to gelato originating from Rome and Egypt descent, this dessert is heavily embedded within everyday food culture in Rome. This gives vendors the opportunity to profit off the popularity of gelato. Although through doing this, authenticity and tradition can be lost and replaced with modern day chains or recipes. This can be seen throughout gelato stores in Rome if you observe closely. Below is a picture comparison of authentically made gelato beside commercially made.
