80% of people who use out-of-network providers say they have to go out-of-network “all of the time” for mental health care, compared to just 6% for physical health care, according to new research from the University of Chicago. Out-of-network providers place a greater financial burden on patients due to higher copays and deductibles. And with in-network users facing growing delays, evidence-based digital solutions can help ease the burden. People living in this country are struggling with access to mental health and substance use care, which was made worse during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Primary care physicians are providing mental health and substance use care to more than half of patients receiving such care, which is why we need to make sure mental health and substance use services are integrated into regular doctor visits. Find more recommendations in The Bowman Family Foundation’s new report, Equitable Access to Mental Health and Substance Use Care: An Urgent Need. https://lnkd.in/d5cv2efX #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters

Great to see this being discussed, but this needs to be instilled into Local Authority culture, as policy setting plays a part but it does little to change underlying culture. Local authorities need to do more to embrace and celerbrate less restrictive models that promote freedom and choice, and support the idea of positive risk taking, as the risk averse culture is what is driving restrictive practices more so than staff choosing an easier life.
